Used to listen to Allan Beswick on Red Rose Radio up north probably 18 years ago. Used to do a "Mr Nasty" type late night phone in, where he would disagree with 95% off the callers just for the sake of it. Great fun to listen to. I remember he got suspended from the station for a while because he upset someone powerfull, dont know who though.
Why do you ask?

I used to listen to "Argue With Allan" back in the 1980s.
Twas very entertaining.
What happened to him is a mystery.
Red Rose Radio seemed to disappear up its own bottom, so perhaps Mr Beswick did as well?
last i heard of him was on BBC GMR - again doing a phone in show - helping folk out with there problems and questions...
things like
Caller 1
"i'd to take my wife on a merchant ship holiday... where can i look"
10 mins later
Caller 2
"if they call up xxx they'll have details of ships that will take passengers - i did it last year"

Beswick: OK let's have a look in the book!.......
.......................................Nope!
Can't find it, how do you spell Myrtle?
Old Gent: NO! Miracle!.....in new York!

Feck, Alan Beswick, takes me right back to a mispent yoof.
We wus reet poor like but one Christmas I received an electronics kit for a pressent. One of the projects was to build a crystal radio. Once constructed I used to listen to his talk in show on Red Rose Radio every night. Tucked up under the covers, complete with all the whistles and pops that those crystal sets used to generate.
There was only one other lad in school who used to listen to it too, and my how we used to laff about the show the next day in the playground.
The guy is a legend, never yet heard a talk show come close to the abuse he used to sling about.

joizus! I used to listen in secret as a kid because my mum thought he was a yobbo and we shouldn't listen to his show, plus it was past our bedtime! Whatever happened to Red Rose, i forget. I listen to Smooth FM now on the internet, funny to hear about traffic build up on junction 11 of the M56 all the way here in Australia!
I ask because I met him this evening
He was comparing or presenting the Mayors awards in trafford as a nominee I had to take to the stage
He said. Who are you?
I said why who are you???(joke!!!)
The audience laughed at least.
heheheh
I upstaged the funny guy just for a second he took it in good heart and he is still very funny...
had a good evening.
just wondered if anyone remembered him and his character Mr NASTY......

Aparently, according to his bio on the GMR website, people ar selling tapes of the Red Rose shows on E bay now.
Damn! Me and a few mates used to tape his shows reguarly but I long since binned all of my casettes. Also had loads of Stu Allen's "Souled Out" show that was on Piccadily (I think) in the mid-late 80s. His show was legendary - real champion of soul, electro, hip hop and had some amazing mixes sent into the show that he'd play non-stop for an hour or so. Imagine Tim Westwood with the humility of John Peel.
