Just can't get over what an amazing car this E39 M5 is. Its already a pretty good car, very very quiet engine about 80K on the clock.
Its been running with a long term fuel consumption of 23.1 for some 8K miles since I bought it.
So I did it a mini service yesterday. Oil, plugs etc. Noticed some scuffing on the outside rim of the front tyres as noticed by Der.
Can had used just under a litre of mobile 1 in the 8K miles. Tyres were noticeably deflated to 22psi (probably due to change in weather) and changed this to 34 all round.
Also noticed a pipe which looked like an oil return from the manifold had a big hole in it. The engine hadn't shown a problem but this was obviously forcing a weak mixture on one side. Tube on the other side was also strangely thin walled along its length. Possibly also a cause of oil loss.
I covered the hole with ducktape, and will replace both tubes within the next few days. However reset the consumption 2 and drove to work this morning. 16 miles from Brands hatch to bexleyheath, including five minutes of sitting at roadworks at the end. Up till the roadworks the car was returning 33.1 mpg, and after the roadworks and at work 27.9mpg.
I can think of no other 5 litre petrol car engine capable of 400bhp but also capable of this sort of fuel consumption ability. This truly is an amazing car.

Yep, what brings my fuel consuption down is the lunchtime run. 16miles either way home.
In the morning and evening not much point to rush to the next traffic jam, but at lunchtime clear road so my fuel consumption comes down to an average of 23.9 currently.
The pipes are at the very front of the engine. and go horizontally each side about 30cm. Strange pipes as if you feel along them and gently squeeze you can feel areas that are very weak and thin and other areas much thicker, almost as if the oils eaten away at the pipes from inside.
They look like pressure relief or oil scavenging valves into the the manifold each side. I'll have to read my books to identify them properly.
