what do you call people
Discussion
reading one of the other threads on the run at the moment, and the comment about being called mate, along with pal, buddy etc.
what is your most hated common phrase to be called and what do you find yourself slipping into and calling people when just chatting in general.
i have to admit i do call people mate on the odd time, more than often though i slip into what other people are using around me.

I used to never say 'mate' but always noticed when others said it. I thought it quite shallow to use it all the time.
However, a few months ago i met a very down to earth fellow who says 'mate' a lot, but only when he means it. In his words 'If like you ill call you mate, if i think you're a w*nker, ill call you w*anker'!
Lately ive found myself calling all my mates 'mate' but i stop short of the w*nker bit!

Being called mate doesn't bother me in the slightest, but then I did grow up in east London.
What I do find intensely annoying is when people over use my name, repeating it every other sentence or so.
Thanks, but I know who I am, we've established that you know who I am so lets just get on with the conversation.

Chap.
Oh yes, this one really winds me up. It used to be a just a Brummie (Allroit chap?) or a Terry Thomas sort of thing (I say chaps...) - both of which are fine - but now loads of people seem to say it.
I much prefer being called mate - it's also the one I use most.

Slightly different for me, but because I lived in Lancashire for a while, had a Yorkshire girlfriend for 5 years and have a fair few Northern mates, bits of Northern sayings creep in whenever I'm with anyone from north of Leicester.

I feel like I am being condescended to when people over use my name, that is probably not actually happening but it really bothers me.
Friends are usually either mate or an abbreviation of their first name (for example, Stefan is Stef etc).
I have a habit of calling delivery drivers c*ntface when I'm work. Luckily they don't seem to dislike it.
I tend to refer to everybody else as either Remus, Romulus, or - if I really dislike somebody - BArry Bethel.

That's a New Labour fluffy interview technique, using the interviewer's first name to win hearts and minds and seem sincere.
My pet hate is 'Well done, you'. Why 'you' on the end? 'Well done' will suffice.

Ive worked on my own and been my own boss to tolerate all the "team building" crap , you either get on with people and work well or you dont , some little prat trying to build a "team spirt" is likey to get sod all coperation from me , but i am a miserable bastard these days
I hate the phrase 'mate' being used by strangers ....
I'm not your mate and hopefully/probably never will be.
I bought a car from a SERIOUSLY dodgy geezer - the likes of which you'd cross the road to avoid (he looked like Robert Carlyle in the Bond 'World is not enough' movie).
Every other word was 'mate' and there's cat-in-hells chance I ever would be.
