I've had a half day to today and as a favour to my auntie i watched my 2 cousins this afternoon while she went chrimbo shopping.

I was playing with the younger cousin (aged 3) singing nursery rhymes and kids songs and we got round to singing "There was a Farmer who had a Dog. His Name was Bobby-Bingo" and all of a sudden the elder cousin (aged 8) pipes up, "Stacey who was called Bobby-Bingo, the farmer or the dog?"

I'm completely stumped. Help.

Valid point, but I'd expect my two year old to request clarification, although not quite so eloquently. Anyway, you don't have enough information to go on. Now we don't know the gender of the farmer (unless there is a gender specific term for female farmer that my currently befuddled brain has forgotten about), we do, however, know the sex of the dog 'cos' otherwise the rhyme would have gone "The was a farmer who had a b1tch..."

Although TBH, that chances are that the dog is called bobby-bingo not because of the previous point but because the fact the farmer has a dog has feck all to do with HIS (the farmers) name.

I'm sure someone else can come up with an academically correct answer, but there you go. I've had a mere two pints at lunch but that, coupled with my giving up smoking has caused my brain to malfunction.

A quick google suggests it's the dog's name. It's a good name though, I'd rather like it for myself

I never used to sing it like that anyway.

I always thought it was: -

"There was a farmer who had a dog and Bingo was his name-o....

B-I-N-G-O...etc

Still doesn't answer the question though!!

I've always had it:

"There was a Farmer,
who had a dog.
His name was Bobby-Bingo.
B-I-N-G-O
B-I-N-G-O
B-I-N-G-O
His name was Bobby-Bingo"

It is an unclear antecedent. Still, the proximity in the sentence would seem to imply that it is the dog's name. Otherwise it might be said, "there was a farmer named ____, who had a dog and Bingo was his name-o".
