I've been looking around for sometime, for a change of career, and I think I may have found something....

Anyone here a Careers Advisor within a Secondary School?

Would like to know what it's really like as opposed to the job spec spiel.

I can't think of anything worse than being around 17 and 18 year olds all day giving them advice..

I did this as a member of The Engineering Council. It wasn't a paid job; I spent a few days per year in local schools giving advice on different routes into engineering and also provided interview training.

I found it rewarding and would still be doing it if circumstances permitted.

Connexions are generally regarded by both school teachers and industry/FE as a bunch of wasters. If you are genuininely interested in the development of young people then the clever money is currently in the Alliance for skills partnerships. Contact your local LSC to see what is happening in your area. If you have a regional develoment agency they may have skills initiatives you might want to get involved in. If you are a qualified teacher or have a background in training or HR then you may find there are vacancies. Hope that helps.

Remember Cascaid, the computer programme the Careers Advisor would plonk you down in front of whilst they went for a sly fag ?

Most vocational interest inventories are of limited use.
