Yet another What TV Thread..
Discussion
Now I know I could search the archives and try to extract the bits that are of relavance, but...
I'm after a new TV, not got the budget for anything silly, the banks took a bit of a beating recently and I don't do debt, and definatly not for a TV when theres bugger all worth watching most of the time.
Had a quick look in the local high street retailers and budget rear projector sets had a picture quality that resembled looking through frosted glass, and were damn ugly, I've not got the cash to go LCD/Plasma and it's sitting in the corner anyway so whats the point.
So whats the best CRT to go for 32" or bigger for under £500 ? :scratchchin:
And what it actually looks like matter as well, current favourite is this...Samsung|http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/453_268046.html but it appears that 'little' CRT's are out of favour in the high street as they all appear to be hidden in a dark corner and the big lights are on the £5000 monsters

I have a Sony 32" CRT, a little more than your budget at £750 but Sony does tend to be a bit more expensive than other makes but my last sony 24" is still going strong after 10 years.
So yes you could find a 32" CRT for around £500
Also think about depth, my TV is almost as deep as it is wide and only just fits on my TV bench
Another vote for Sony here, you may find your local high street has Sony 32" (or larger) for around £500, often with a DVD or VCR chucked in. You could also throw some money Derestrictor's way: www.digitaldirect.co.uk

The Philips 'Pixel Plus 2' 32"ers are as good as CRTs come, and I think with a bit of searching online you might be able to find one for around your budget. I bought one a year ago and it was £1,100 then, but still knocks spots off any LCD or Plasma that my friends/relatives have.
The newest Sony CRTs are pretty good (although not quite as good as the Philips) and usually look aesthetically pleasing too. All the Sony stuff I've ever owned has lasted and lasted (tv, stereo, dvd, laptop, digital camera, etc) and if it hadn't been for the mindblowing performance of the Philips I'd have chosen Sony without a doubt.
Also have to say that some of the cheap Panasonic gear is also pretty good. I've seen a fair few deals around offering 32" CRT, stand and DVD player for <£500, and with xmas deals just around the corner I'm certain a DVD recorder could be had within that price too.
