An octogenarian friend of mine is looking for a self propelled, walk-behind, reasonably lightweight, petrol-engined rotary mower, with a blade width of 18" or so.

Would be grateful for any manufacturer/model recommendations, but (and here's the important part) it must have an electric start.

James Here;
I bought a Rover last season as I'd had it with poorer quality makes. It is supurb and fully recommended. I've got the commercial version at 21", it will collect wet grass, mulch etc. I beleive there is an electric start option.

www.rovermowers.com.au

I've had a look and they do do an electric 18" mower. You would have to check it's Uk availiability though.

Hope that helps.

You could also have a look at the offerings from Honda.

Had a Honda for 3 years, nothing but trouble. If I was not so mean I would have thrown it away by now.

So you could by a Rover.. and mow half the lawn before it blows and head gasket and they go bust..

or you could by a Honda, and have a Taxi mower..

Atco and Hayter are other brands that spring to mind. Although I run a landscaping business we don't own any lawnmowers, so my point of view is based on a limited amount of personal experience.

Got a Mountfield mower and it's the absolute dogs proverbials ....

You can buy direct from them - absolutely brilliant service - cannot fault in any way at all.

We were looking for one, investigated and compared them all and ended up with a Mountfield.

K

Edited to add that I don't work for them, or associated with them in any way, other than as an extremely satisfied customer.

Thaks for the link to the Mountfield site kinky.
It's much more user friendly than the Honda site.

Something like this would appear to be just the ticket. Will have to see how heavy/manouverable it is

Sparks,

They have dealers that you can go and see, touch and feel, ask questions, etc, etc ....

Then buy off the website and they will deliver for free. They spent 2 hours with us showing us how it worked, how to maintain it - oil changes, etc, etc .....

Thoroughly impeccable service.

Even though our 'local' official dealer was near Windsor (about 5 miles away), it was delivered by a dealer in Guildford (circa 20 miles away) - and a thoroughly decent chappie.
