Living/working in Gibraltar
Discussion
Morning, bit of a long shot I know, but I was wondering if any of the esteemed collective have any experience of living and working in Gibraltar?
Naturally, I've already asked my accountant and Google is going to get a thrashing, but real world(!) experiences would be appreciated. Cheers!

My concern would be like with Hong Kong how long before we give into presure and give it to the spanish?
Maybe we will hold onto it longer due to its strategic importance but I guess its a matter of time.
My memories of it where that its small and if you want to escape to the spanish mainland the spanish make it easy to leave but very hard to get back in with lots of waiting in line etc.

It doesn't have separate status like the Channel Islands then - which are NOT part of the EU?
Edited to add - it IS in the EU but has a special status which exempts it from some of the normal EU requirements, like having to have a VAT system in place. Its special status is due for review in 2010.

John,
My g/f's brother and sister in law are about to move over there to start a new life. I went there for the day back in August.
Couple of observations:
If you like a drink and a smoke, are a gadget freak and like after shave, you're quids in. Everything was dirt cheap - petrol 53p a litre!!! Booze and fags similar discounts.
The border crossing is a poor Spanish joke. Obviously theres a bit of friction there, but we queued for about an hour to get in, and about an hour to get back out again. Contrast that with other borders in the EU - that you literally drive straight through, and its piss poor.
The currency is Sterling, theres telephone boxes, coppers, the whole 9 yards. Most shops take Euros too. You will also find English shops you'll be familiar with, such as Morrisons / Safeway and so on.
English is the first language.
Finally, it seems you can only move to certain areas of Gib if you're a "newbie". If you've been living there longer than 3 years (I think?), then you may live anywhere. Property is reasonably cheap, but as its such a small piece of land, theres loads of apartments and very few houses. Marina side apartments cost the earth. In town dwellings less so.
Non main roads are VERY narrow, not unlike City of London type width. Theres lots of scooters (mainly because you can drive past all the queuing traffic at the border...).
I found locals really friendly, and it was very clean. And bloody hot in August!!!!
HTH,
Greg
