"Attention Taleban you are cowardly dogs," the message reads. "You allowed your fighters to be laid down facing West and burnt.

"You are too scared to retrieve their bodies. This just proves you are the ladyboys we always believed you to be ."

So they are supposed to kill the bad guys than get all misty-eyed about it? And I suppose that British troops muttering that Hitler only had one ball should have been court-martialed?
Go USA!

What they actually did was burn two dead fighters (muslims are supposed to be buried) and then drive through the village they killed them in playing that abuse.

Firstly, who are the bad guys - the poor Iraqis, trampled underfoot by the US-supported Saddam regime for decades & then indiscriminately killed for 2 years by racist bloodthirsty coalition troops, or the US troops there illegally and under false pretenses seemingly violating rules of warfare at every opportunity?

Secondly, if all the troops did was taunt the opposition you may have a point. Fact is, they desecrated the bodies of those they killed.

indiscriminately? how do you know this? illegally and under false pretences seemingly violating rules of warfare? and are you sure that it was at every opportunity? and naturally you think the iraqis/insurgents/terrorists/iranian special forces have been whiter than white?

It's a war! do you expect the troops on both sides to be playing nicely?

I don't usually stir trouble but your comments smack of tabloid-ese

and if you're thinking of flaming me before you do so, consider that I sit firmly on the fence as to whether the iraq escapade was right, although i'm edging towards thinking it was wrong and a waste of time..

Just an observation (and not that it makes any difference to the reaL subject), but this story relates to Afghanistan, not Iraq.

Ah, true. My apologies for getting the location wrong. Not sure that anything elses changes, as you say... The Taleban were US-supported, the invasion of Afghanistan was illegal, etc.

I bet you don't get upset if the Iraqis call Westerners 'cowardly dogs'. Why the difference?

Although they didn't broadcast it on the BBC amid whoops of national joy - like they do when they get hold of our troops.

There seems to be a lot of 'fight fire with fire' type support on this thread.
Last year I saw the footage in Iraq of 2 american soldiers' bodies burned and paraded/dragged round the street to jovial celebrations. I felt sick. I also felt the perpetrators were fu.cking animals.
Why become the same? We have far superior firepower at our disposal. Why degenerate into the same animalistic methods of warfare that we are faced with when our advantage should be dignity and technology?

Every time I see something like this, be it Afganistan or Iraq it confirms to me that we are not neccesarily the 'just force' in these situations.

Sorry, it must be my ignorance, but why was the invasion of Afghanistan illegal? I thought that it dated back to when a true UN quorum existed, everyone was in agreement, the Taleban were given formal ultimatums to hand over Bin Liner, due process was done and so on.

Explain please.

This kind of thing has been happening since the dawn of mankind. The only difference is that with modern communication systems we all get to hear about it and express our disgust.

It was legal and noone objected (well noone who mattered) even the French helped out, but everyone just assumes it wasn't because it was illegal in Iraq.

Sorry ... didn't mean to imply that the US hadn't backed people who ended up becoming the Taleban. The point was that that doesn't mean much in itself. Certainly doesn't make the US repsonsible for their behaviour, and it doesn't make booting them out of power hypocritical ... these two being the usual criticisms implied by saying "the US supported Taleban/Saddam/Israel/etc".

During WW2 Britain and the USA supported Stalin. Does that mean we're responsible for the gulags?
