I get increasingly wound-up about the ever growing cost generated by the Public Sector - often doing "stuff" and employing people who add no real value ....or doing things inefficiently ..... this ultimately puts up the total tax burden.

What would YOU cut to make the public sector more efficient ?

FWIW I would chop :

1. Road Tax - replace the revenue with either an equivalent tax on fuel , and implement an MOT/Insurance disc ( when you get your car insured each year ). This would save all those unnecessary jobs at the DVLA.

2. TV License Fee : Loads of administrators and detectors are employed here : cut BBC funding by at least 10 % , save all the admin costs , and collect the balance via general taxation - saving ££m in admin.

3. Prison Service : contract this out to a 3rd world country - where prisoners can be housed and looked after more cheaply - this would also help the economies of various countries in Africa and Asia. This would save billions - who cares if the prisons are a bit uncomfortable.

You might have a problem with unions though, i believe this is what is stopping Brown from cutting the extra fat off our civil services.

OK once we've sacked all these spongers paid for by our taxes. What do they do then?
Go on the dole and get paid for by our taxes!
It is not like there are thousands of jobs in manufacturing waiting for them.
I don't generally disagree with the idea of smaller government but I've yet to see the plan for after they have been sacked.

Those ideas are entirely too sensible. Especially love that prison idea, send them to Siberia

Of course if they did all that then a ton of people would loose their cushy jobs, and they wont let go of them easily.

Perhaps since we would all be paying lower taxes the economy would naturally grow due to higher consumer spending which in turn would create new jobs ?

I do agree with this point, think of the cost savings.

Lets get rid of the NHS as well whilst we're at it, then we could get rid of the police force, fire brigade and the Ambulance service as well...

Why not get rid of mose of the Civil Service, and replace them with Prisoners. They'll be unpaid (saving billions so taxes on important things like Optimax could be abolished) and lets be honest, couldn't do any worse a job...

My impression is that Brown is completely in favour of Public Sector employment. Compare the drop in unemployment, and the significant increase in public sector jobs since labour got into power and.. what a coincidence. Labour as a whole believe in 'big' government as a significant part of the overall economy and a way of moderating our lives.

Oi, leave the prison service alone. MrsH makes a lucrative living teaching the old lags to be computer literate.

The NHS could be replaced by private health care - its basically a system of post-war rationing in its current form and can't meet demand.

I doubt that contracting -out Police / Fire / Ambulance to the 3rd World would work - response times may be a bit slow.

I think you miss the point here..... the OP was referring to unnecessary areas of government - of which there are many.

I agree, i might be mixing brown with blair, anyway one of them suggested cuttin back the public sector and got predictably threatened by the unions. I can't see how a huge public sector is sustainable really, im guessing the tax payers will be squeezed out of existance while the burgeoning public sector is kept in place.

Well most of the nhs Management should go they are not needed.

We need to keep the police and the fire brigade. The ambulance service is largely contracted out to local taxi companies anyway. Only emergency ambulances are needed equipped with paramedics.

The rest of the civil service and local government officers are generally completely surplus to requirements. There are of course thousands of speed humps to be removed, speed cameras to be smashed and removed, new roads to be built, buses to be destroyed, cycle paths to be retarmaced, speed limit signs to be removed. The civil service should be put to work doing this. In addition we need some administration to sequestrate the assets of anti car charities and we need some crafts people to build the stocks so we can deal with Liberal democrat councils who are "off message".

Oh and while we are at it all schools should be private and the parents should get a governement grant to pay for the kids education, this would of course enable them to top up school fees.

To be honest, on day one of being in charge I would sack 50% of them indiscriminately.

The remain 50% would pick up the slack in fear of their (non) jobs

No use the Isle of Wight, already a purpose built prison there, use it as a central hub then build a big fence around the Island. Sort of a Snake Pliskin type of prison.

Umm, no, the remaining 50% would go on strike until you reinstated the sacked workers. You might need to make some union leaders 'disappear'

Labour created another quarter of a million yes 250000 of these useless jobs and filled them with jobsworths just to ensure that the useless Labour ones in Parliament can fill their troughs again....useless and should all be eliminated or at least paid for what they do...i.e. nothing!!!!!

These scum are the ones who give rise to ASBOs being given to gardeners, who farm out criminals as parking wardens etc etc etc..... shoot the flickin lot of them!!!

Thinking of downsizing, how much does the 'dole' and disability allowance take out of our economy, i get the impression a good 80-90% of claimants can work but choose not to.
