Whoops lousy typing.. TILEhurst meant to read.

Anyone here based in Tilehurst? There's a chance we could be moving there in the future & am wondering if it's a bit quiter/safer the Reading town proper?

thanks

Much nicer and much safer!

I used to live in Binfield (near Tilehurst), and cycle regularly through there.

Homes are more expensive but there's no traffic, very few chavs and it's got easy access to Reading if and when you need to get your shopping done.

I live in Calcot, just at the bottom of the hill from Tilehurst. Moved there a couple of years ago and not had any problems at all. Handy for the town, as beanbag said, and south of the motorway is sprawling english countryside dotted with nice villages and pubs (and a terriffic butcher five miles down the road in Pangbourne) Can't go wrong really!

they do the best pies in that place!

I thought that Tilehurst had a reputation as being 'patchy' some parts really nice, but some areas very rough?

Calcots always been the 'better' of the Reaading suburbs hasn't it? Pangbourne is nice too.

unless you are going to find a house in caversham (which I think is where puggit lives), then stay out of Reading.

Its a one horse town, and the horse is dead.

Its also full of begging scum, junkies and dealers on every street corner, and if your really unlucky to be cajolled into buying a house near a student area, youll prob end up in "drive by" land where most of the dealers have a shoot up every couple of weeks to see whos got control of the "patch".

Someone has tried to mug me outside my house, and ive been randomly attacked in the street. Weve been broken into twice in 2 years, and only the other day, when 3 of us left the house, leaving another housemate in, a couple of local bastards tried to kick down the door when we were about a minute away from the house.

I hate the place, so unless youve found an island guarded by your own personal army, stay out my friend!

Hurst - there's nothing there - just a few houses and no real centre; couple of nice pubs in the vicinity though.

Proved last weekend that Reading has some of the easiest pretty girls in the South East though.

Flashman's evaluation of nailability/fitness ratio of the women of various towns puts Reading at second place, after Cheltenham.

Wise words, Prince.

Living in London sucks. You have to talk to girls/take them to dinner before they, well, you know.

Poor show. Reading lasses are far more sanguine about the whole thing.

Ahh I see.. how does 1 tell .. who's the Tilehurst font of knowledge? Have to admit, it's a bit near the arse that's Reading for my liking, however have found a house I really like. Wonder why they're moving.. wonder wonder wonder.

There are certain places I know of in Reading (pubs/clubs - not the Oxford road), where you wouldnt even need to say "get your coat" to a girl, they would follow you home without you saying a word..

Where abouts did you have the pleasure of sampling Berkshires finest Harry?

Some utter hole called the Fez Club.

I was blind drunk, to be fair. A fairly normal state of affairs.

ah yes the fez! an authentic turkish atmosphere in the ghetto of the south.
Try and avoid it if I can - last time I came outside the fez at chucking out time last term, I saw some poor bugger get clonked round the head with a bottle of becks by a tramp then chased into the church yard. I suspect he was relieved of his wallet, watch etc shortly after..

glad you got utility out of your stay in our nasty little town!

drove back up there to see what the journey after work is like.. was fine. Parked up near the house & had a stroll around. Pleased to see that there were 3 pubs within easy stroll. The bad news? Hated them all. Bugger.

Oh well back to continuing struggling with the fat mortgage methinks. Expect this is the trouble with having spoilt ourselves for the last year in out snug little rural setup. Such an effing dilemma . Still, if we did move I might be back in V8 territory next year; would bring a smile

Have you thought about Theale Edt? Just a couple of miles from Tilehurst over the other side of the motorway, but much nicer. I ended up in Calcot because I couldn't find the right property there, but you never know.

Nice little village, lots of pubs (including a couple of good 'uns - look for the Crown and the Volunteer), and closer still to the rural idyll...
