Here's a better idea for a horology-related present - lay your todger on a table and ask the missus to put two hands and a face on it

Although the Breitling is rather tasty!

Another vote for the Monaco:

Less costly than the others but its simply the nicest watch around. On my "next" list....

NO NO NO NO NO!!

What you want, is a Maurice Lacroix Phase de Lune De tanneau. It is part of the masterpiece collection. Being a horolophile - a complete watch geek, I have been through the lot that are currently out of my budget. The Maurice Lacroix is easily the most impressive, to the extent that I bought a Maurice Lacroix Pontos in the hope of trading up in a few years time!

You know you want to....

Sorry, I don't get it. You could get a Submariner Date for £2.5K

I wouldn't touch one with a bargepole TBH. Maurice Lacroix is a relatively new brand that was invented as a fashion house in the mid 1970's. While producing some aesthetically pleasant watches it has none of the prestige or history of a true manufacture (correct spelling).

For a gentleman of taste and discernment with that budget I would recommend the Omega as they are fine quality watches and have the new co-axial movement invented by George Daniels. The watch will hold it's value better than many other brands too.

I am not a big fan of Breitling, as I find them too fussy in their design, but that is a matter for personal taste. I also think the quality of their cases and movements is inferior to Omega.

If you are interested in something really fine I might have a used Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Centenary that may just squeeze into your budget. These are serious watches for the real collector:

I'd second this one. Although I have developed a soft spot for the Navi.

My advice is, go to a jeweler (preferably on Bond street) and try them all out for yourself.

PS - I have a tag already guys, so no more; the Monaco (Steve McQueen) is lovely but WAAAAAAAAAAAY too big for my wrist, i'd have bought it if it fit!!!

Have you tried one? Don't be put off by 'newer' brands, just because they are new. To do so would be to rule out some seriously high class and very beautiful timepieces. And by saying they are a newer brand means little to me as I was born a decade after M-L came about....the decade that saw the Swiss watch industry fight back...which in my opinion gives them a well deserved place on any shortlist of a gentleman of taste and discernment....

P.S I agree with you about Brietling though!

I love the Monacao but think the a Caliber 36 Monza is even better. Its based on the El Primero movement, hence the increase in price over a standard Monza. Beautiful see through glass back also.

I've got both horses for course really, the Monaco is a lovely looking watch, the Monza is a nice bit of watch engineering.

Given the original choice, I'd have the Zenith El Primero. Mainly because it was either that or the Monza, and I chose the Monza.
