Mrs thestag is looking to trade in the trusty family Picasso for a year old Zafira Hdi

The Picasso is a 1.8SX on a 51 has covered 44k and has a full service history. Bodywork is looking a bit scruffy but nothing that a ding master couldn’t fix in a couple of hours, I got a quote for £300 to include all car park door dings and repaint both back doors and rear wings to bring paint upto the standard of the rest of the car.

Vauxhall offered £2,800 trade in against a £12k zafira, Parkers suggest it should be nearer £4,500. I know the negotiations have to start somewhere but surely the piss is being taken here….

Can anyone offer any advice

Cheers

Monet

We tried for a Constable already but it was a bit pricey. Anyway it is a Paloma Picasso and not the master himself.

Honest opinion here, bear with me

Its petrol, there is no shortage of them, they're ugly, they are renowned for being very unreliable (coil packs especially with age) yours does'nt sound the best so they'd have great trouble moving it on.

Id say 3k tops, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but why do people buy such awful cars in the first place? Would a 4-5-6 year old merc diesel estate still be worth nearly what you paid for it after the same time?

A zafira almost as bad as the Citroen in depreciation stakes, that might be worth 2k more than lemon over the same period.

Go have a look at a C/E-class estate I think you'll be very suprised what you get for your money.

Trade guides put the Picasso between £3200 - 4200 dependent on condition - add another £100 if it's an 02/51.

Of course, their price could be justifiable if the Zafira's £1500 too cheap... but I doubt it is.

I'd start at £4k and expect to negotiate to £3500 from there.

You could keep it for three years, then the Zafira you were considering would be worth about £4k

Et Voila, you're 8 grand up

Can't see the point in trading "up" one 2nd hand family knock about for another, unless its not suitable for the use you intend for it.

They're pretty much the same sort of car, so why not keep it until it dies (should be a good while, seeing as its only 4 years/40k miles old)?

If you're that worried about a grand or so on the trade-in price, then surely the depreciation on the Vauxhall is the biggest worry? Presumably you've just effectively paid the bulk of the Citroen's depreciation over the time you've owned it, so why not get a return for that cash by using it almost depreciation-free for the next few years?

Absolutely. The rise in maintenance costs over the next three years (if any) will be very insignificant against he depreciation you'll suffer when trading the thing in, and the depcreciation on your new steed over the next three years.

Buying new, and trading in like for like in 3-4 years is a surefire way to burn large stacks of excess cash, and for what? Your new Zafira won't feel that much different to a similar car on a 51, and the car salesman isn't even that chuffed with you 'cause a) he earns next to nothing on your new car and b) he's faced with offloading your trade in which in all honesty doesn't sound like a blue chip investment to start with (oversupply of that model on the market, not in the mintest of conditions).

I just don't see it - why would one want to spend so much on an 'ordinary' car, just to have a newer plate on your driveway?

Your car books at £4450 and has done book miles.....
It is not a book car but I'm sure with a bit of ringing around they will be able to get £3,500/ £3,750....it's not white is it

Then go for money off the car! you should get £500 atleast off.

Might be worth looking at a new one as they usually have big discounts available and 0% chucky and you might get free insurance too!

Happy hunting!

Editted to add don't bother with Parkers guide! your loo roll is about as accurate!
