Soft top pick up options, what else apart from Land Rovers?

Main use will be localish around the North York Moors, surf boards and mountain bikes. Only need two seats, preferably not costing the earth. Ideally 25+ mpg, so no yank V8s!

What ideas are there? A 110 Landy with a 200 or 300 TDI and some form of bikini top is the first thing that comes to mind, but I was thinking there may be something else, it doesn't need to be 4x4.

Can't think of any other pick up. Soft top and off road usually make for a messy combo. You can of course get some 4x4s though like the Wrangler, Vitara & Evoque.

Early Freelanders were available with a removable back/top.

Seems like a bit of a weird/niche ask. Soft top pickups but doesn't need to be 4x4? For biking and surfing? Can I suggest a van? Speaking from experience, the perfect surf/biking vehicle - just pick a size/price that suits.

Felicia Fun? Not quite a soft-top, but optionally open. Fits the surfer vibe!

Subaru Brat (or even the base pickup). Completely indestructible.

Yup, I'm sure having your bike / board hanging off the back of a pickup earns extra scene points but they'd quickly be lost when somebody helps themselves. A van fits the brief and offers a bit more security / weather protection / place to get changed / sleep etc...

Citroën Mehari.

Or the more recent C3 Pluriel.

25 mpg should not be an issue smile

Completely indestructible, except for the 99% of them that have been destroyed by rust.

I do like them, it’s a shame no other manufacturer is producing a similar pickup today.

Presumably it's the rust in the Subaru that makes them open top? Otherwise it's a..... Pickup, which is not what the OP asked for.

And if you're sacrificing the open top nature of a pick up, surely the answer is a Holden of some sort.

25mpg entirely possible. While idling.

Yank V8 with LPG an option?

They did make a Subaru Brat with a targa/t-bar, although I’ve only ever seen one on the TV show “My name is Earl”.

That’s not a soft top pickup. It’s a pickup with a canvas tilt..

I actually think that C3 is quite cute!

My ideal would be an MX5 pick up, unfortunately they don't readily exist!

I looked at a few on eBay and thought they didn't look like the photo above, however a brief Google resulted in the following:

Key Features & Design

• Multi-Configuration Roof: Marketed as a "5-in-1" vehicle, it can transform from a standard hatchback into a panoramic sunroof, a full cabriolet, a roadster ("spider"), or a makeshift pick-up.
• Removable Arches: To go full cabriolet or spider, the driver must manually remove two heavy, 12 kg side roof arches and store them elsewhere.

Older Suzuki Jeep. I rented one to go up a mountain and that had a folding soft top roof.

I won't talk about how I ignored the map and decided to go my own way up bare rock and how the plucky little thing kept on going until my then girlfriend had had enough biggrin

Jeep Wrangler comes with long and short version that have a soft top or removable hard top. Not a pick up, but close.
