4 out of the last 6 winters we have spent 2 n a bit months in the Canaries. We have now bought a motorhome so want to travel around the EU on the shoulder months which of course.....schengen rules.....puts a bit of a blocker on the Jan-mar bit. SO we thought where else can we go.

Warm/hot....Carb £££ nope, SA...nah, Oz or NZ maybe but could be pricey as well. So we thought maybe rent a villa for 2/3 months in SEA...

Anyone been there, done that. What and where, thru who....

Thailand could get pricey. I'd look at Vietnam or Philippines if I was you. Rent a scooter for 1-2 months and scoot around, it'll make you feel 20 years younger.

Thailand’s tightened up its tourist visas a bit recently. Visa free for 30 days but you’d need to apply for a 60 day tourist visa

I suppose it depends on your appetite for adventure. Phuket expensive and not very adventurous. How about Hua Hin then??? That'd be a great place to base yourselves for a few months - if it must be Thailand. Ever so slightly more adventurous is Vietnam, and then after that for the full Asian adventure i'd head to Visayas region of Philippines.

no nothing is in stone...as they say. We have backpacked all around the SEA so am open to elsewhere. As you say, to get a small private villa in Phuketish £2500-£3500 a month. So wouldnt mind the PH islands at all, But know zip about them apart from Palins TV show!!!!

If we didn't have a dog, we would do Goa from January to March. Have friends who spend the winters there, £11 a night b&b.

We go to Thailand every year now for circa 2 months stay in a couple of destinations in bungalows in nice areas and the whole cost for everything from flights to food etc never costs more than £6.5k or £3.25k each so I wouldn t say it s expensive.
I would avoid Phuket there are better places to spend the winter.
We go to a place in Khao Lak a small resort of 20 bungalows where we are going in 2027 for 6 weeks of our trip and hopefully 2 months in 2028 where many international tourists can spend up to 3 months but like many of these type of places they can book up months in advance or even like where we go a year in advance.
Chang Rai not Chang Mai would be a nice place to spend some time great food and a few temples to visit ie White Temple is fantastic as temples go

I have posted this before, we stay in the Blue Lagoon Khaolak, the ability to ride a scooter is key although an elderly German couple who go every year hire a car for a couple of months, this enables you to get out and about ie up to Takua Pa which is a lovely ride out through countryside or to various restaurants nearby although the resort has its own restaurant and a few nearby which are ok but venture out and go where the locals go.
I think Khaolak is a nice place to spend time especially out side the main town area either in the hills or near a beach.
The sea is lovely but as pointed in previous posts not as nice as Koh Lipe but imo a lot better than Goa to which I spent a month there in the late 80s and subsequently had 2 holidays there in the 90s but I wouldn’t go back
