This is in the middle of a wall. I assume it’s a spur and not on a ring.

Can I simply change it for an unfused single socket?

It's a switch to turn something on and off, not really a straight replacement to a socket.

Especially with the reassuring "FIRE" legend. biggrin

Bit more info required.

Behave. It's a spur for a electric fire. No reason it couldn't be swapped to a socket

Is it?

We can guess - and you're probably right - but none of us know that yet.

I agree it’s intended for an electric fire as it’s low in the middle of the longest wall in a lounge. It doesn’t control anything from what I can see. Just useless but would be a useful accessible socket there for the hoover etc.

What if you actually have a fire?

We have a similar switch in our hallway. It's a device to start a fire in case you have intruders or want to claim for total loss on your insurance. Fitted them quite a bit in the 80's and 90's.

Don't mess about with it at all, those switches send direct signals to artillery command posts hehe

I would think the best thing would be to turn the power off, unscrew the faceplate and get a couple of photos so we can see what wiring you actually have behind it.

I would have to press the "fire" button at least once and pretend I was launching an ICBM.
