No, not those sorts, but I am looking for an alternative mag to read. Maxim and FHM were my chosen reading material, but I guess I am just getting a little old, and at least one of them is devolving into porn.

Am looking for something with interesting articles (not just football, or even cars for that matter) that might stretch my horizons.

I still think I am too young for Readers Digest, so any other (serious) suggestions welcome.

I feel the same. I have read a few Time Magazines recently which I have really enjoyed. Am trying Arena out this month

Sometimes read GQ or Arena. They're OK.

New Scientist. The Economist. etc etc

The best rag to feature girls always used to be Playboy - at least it had vaguely interesting articles in between those tasteful portraits of scantily clothed young ladies.

Shame the international editions were still so US-centric.

Thanks for the suggestions folks. Had felt a bit of a plank trying to work out what mags were what in Smiths.

Have not tried GQ or Arena. Will have a look.

New Scientist, now there is a blast from the past. I will have to go track one down and have a look.

Economist - Might be a little beyone me.

One thing I've never understood.

Mens magazines, women on the front.

Womens magazines, women on the front

Odd that.

I've not read GQ since it was a quarterly mind you, used to be good back then.

Two men's magazines that I enjoy reading are GQ and Arena. The writing style is intelligent, witty and punchy. The articles and features cover an interesting and diverse range of topics and the standard of design and photography is excuisite. Where they win hands down over the other men's mags is that they are sexy without being puerile or cheap. Of course, other men's magazines have their own target market and are very good at what they do, but after a while men like yourself need something more grown up and sophisticated.

One of my favourite fashion magazines is Arena Homme +. It is one of the slickest magazines on the shelf. The photography, design and print quality is superb.

I don't think so, you should give it a go. The Economist goes for a very easy reading style, it is far less ponderous than the FT.

FHM is going downhill. It used to be about top celebrity Totty, but now they seem to be going more for topless pictures of page 3 models.

Wired I have always been a massive fan of.

Buy it by the issue though as UK subscriptions are silly money.

Shockingly bad. They left me seriously worried and thinking that there are some incredibly sad and desperate young men out there.

Only two things I read with any regularity is The Wire (music) and Private Eye.

Recommend both, for very different reasons.

Try 'Money Week'. It's alot less dry than the other financials, had an interesting bit every week on how to spend it as well, yahct versus a porche, latest exec gadgets etc as well as excellent and informative information on what's going on in the world.

I'm just about to cancel my subscription to MH. It is ok as an occasional read, but each month the mags are very samey, guaranteed on the cover article of

"Get big arms fast"
or
"Get the sex you deserve"
or
"get a 6 pack"
