Microsoft has just announced they are massively reducing their cloud storage as part of their M365 subscription plans.

Reducing from a possible 6TB to 2TB.

Typical Microsoft, they reduce storage considerably, but try to dress this up as a positive because of the pooling of data.

Wait until they decide they don’t like what your storing and permanently block your account with no robust human appeals process.

My main storage is in iCloud and backup storage is Dropbox, I wouldn’t let Microshaft store anything I cared about.

I could understand them saying that it will change when you pay for another month / annual subscription, but I've pre-paid (due to buying a bulk pack of subscriptions) until sometime in 2029, so wonder whether they'd offer a refund if I cancel as they're not delivering the service I have already paid for.

I never paid a premium for the 'upgraded' AI version they talk about in the email, so my installs don't include it.

Although I assume I will be exempt from these changes until if/when I renew in 2029, as the email says:

Your cloud storage allowance will change from 1 TB per person to 2 TB of shared storage so everyone on the plan can use the free space while keeping their own accounts and files private. This change will apply after your first renewal after 2nd May, 2027.

This is only for the family plans though, IIRC personal plans have always been 1TB?

This is incredibly frustrating on a paid for service- very disappointing Microsoft. I chose the plan several years ago so that I could share it with my parents. Anyone know of an alternative service?

For data storage? Loads - Google Drive is probably the biggest alternative, but if you want something in the EU then you can use Proton or several other providers.

It's always a good idea to keep your own copy as well, on something you own.

Proton or JottaCloud.

I use both. Jotta is more mature and integrates well with iOS.

Thank you both, I'll have a look at them. I'm used to the way OneDrive behaves and integrates with Windows, so I'm not looking forward to the change!

Personal was 1Tb, now 2tb? There can't be many using the 6x1tb on family? I have it and I am using well under 1tb across the whole family. The change means I can now easily backup more of my server stuff to an extra location. I would have thought this is genuinely better for more families than it's worse for.

You can hit the individual family limits if you have a wife and daughter who take videos all the time. They are up to 750Gb & 825Gb respectively. Mine was a quite modest 400Gb. It is the phone media that takes up most of the storage space.

I'm taking this "opportunity" to move the older media - going back to 2014 to our Synology DSM. All the phones in the family have been additionally backing up to Synology since around 2022, so going forward will only be storing the latest year on OneDrive. Although maybe I might just switch to only backing up to Synology - but I have 9 months to make that decision.

The rate my family use up their personal OneDrive storage, this decision would have been forced on me suddenly over the next 6 months when one of them would have hit their limit - and I'm not sure if they would have realised until well after the event.

I've got a boring job over the next few weeks of downloading their OneDrive media to a PC and then uploading it to their personal space on the DSM.

After a recommendation last year from here I use OpenDrive to backup the DSM - 99USD/year for unlimited storage.

What on earth are you all taking videos of to record nearly a TB of mobile videos?!

Do any of them ever get looked at??

It is nearly 12 years worth.

Having a quick look - my daughter has 29000 files in her Camera Roll, 4500 from this year alone. 21000 are jpg, 6000 are mp4s (436Gb).

She also has 10000 screenshot files - I have no idea why, as I thought I'd setup OneDrive to only backup the Camera. I am going to suggest they all get deleted.

I haven't started looking at my wife's but she loves to take videos - and I'm dreading to start as she will want them all.

The ones stored in Synology Photo are looked at fairly regularly by the family, I would guess the ones stored in OneDrive aren't. I'm quite good at keeping Synology Photos up to date with our holidays, and I'm fairly sure most of my photos are already on there.
