If you have dug up anything odd or interesting in your garden, or at work (in the ground) I am a vastly experienced Metal Detectorist with an encyclopaedic knowledge of anything from the Iron Age, Roman, Saxon, Medieval, Georgian and Victorian periods.

What have you got I can help with?

Don't you mean a metal detector?

That's the tool; the user is a detectorist. Or at least they are since the TV series!

Here's a couple of coins my mother dug up in her garden many years ago - if you can provide any further information on them it would be interesting:

Almost certain the left is a cartwheel penny or twopence, 1797 - I'd guess it's the former and the one on the right is it's penny sibling.

Thanks Stu. I think the penny had been used as a darts target!

She donated her collection of 30- 40 assorted coins to the local church, which had a small 'museum' area, in about 1980. Last year I called in and to my amazement there they were! (though sadly with a couple of gaps where coins had presumably been stolen).

Beat me to it and absolutely correct.

Just for further info, these coins were so big and fat because they were actually worth their weight in copper/value.
