During the height of the summer I decided to try and use my cooker hood to get some airflow through the house. Yeah, stupid idea. I hadn’t considered that they’re presumably not really built to run for hour after hour.

At a certain point I noticed the fan was no longer running. It didn’t blow a fuse or trip the RCD. There was no bad smell or anything I noticed.

The fan now doesn’t run on any of the three speeds. The lights still work. The little telltale LED which indicates that the motor is on still lights up. Nothing at all from the motor.

So far I have tried turning it off and on again, and checked that the fan isn’t seized. I guess have a prod around with the multimeter? I will be checking the terminals for AC voltage I suppose?

Parts are available, control panel with the buttons ~£50, the above with the motor and the capacitor too ~£130.

Obv with the price of the motor a whole new hood could be considered but would mean having to mess around with the coving and splashback

Ive replaced a few motors in cooker hoods over the years, think the last one was about £30, if you can get any numbers from it they are normaly easy to find.

Easy to find but not £30 in this case! How do I know it’s not the PCB or something? I guess take it apart…

Measure if there is voltage getting to the motor.
