We were away for a weekend and since we’ve been back we get an occasional sewer gas smell in the drive. Apparently while we’re away someone further up road had a drain problem. I don’t know who or what the problem was. We’ve had Wessex Water out twice and they’ve pressure washed the drain in the road, taken some scale out, put a camera down our drain to the road and everything is clear. A few years ago we had a fungus from an old tree growing into our pipe every year but the pipe was lined and it’s clear now. The second time WW came he sealed our inspection chamber lid with silicone but we still get the same smell. Next doors drains are too far away so don’t think it’s that. I don’t know where to look next.

Hard one to diagnose. Unlikely to be to emanating from the inspection chamber, most have unsealed lids and don’t cause issues, I have two inspection cambers within 6ft of my back door, unsealed lids, no issues. If you want to rule out smells from the inspection chamber, Google ‘double seal manhole covers’. Have you had the pipe work back from the inspection chamber to your property checked for issues?

Haven’t checked the pipe from the inspection chamber to the house but it’s only about 1m to traps for the kitchen and bathroom waste. The soil pipe goes directly into the chamber too.

I had a similar problem recently ,horrible smell, lifted manhole in back garden and had feint smell from it

Front of house had worst smell ,the front rainwater drain off the roof smelled worse ,peered down it and realised I forgot to put the plastic cover back in after cleaning out the bottom of the drain

Dead hedgehog with maggots in there yikes

I did wonder whether something had died and was decomposing. I would have thought sewer smells are different to that though.
