Always wanted to start one of these, and I believe it's time with snow on Cairngorm Mountain today.

We're a little short of named storms so far this year!

I've just ordered a new ice scraper for the car so we'll be needing sunscreen all the way into new years...

Well timed with a frost this morning in Aberdeenshire. Feels like another one setting in tonight too. Wood burner lit.

Bugger!

The UK experienced 117 consecutive days this summer with the temperature being 20C+ somewhere in the UK.

And today, 7th October is the day that streak came to an end and it is combined with the opening of the winter thread frown

I hope we get many more summers like the summer of 2026 but this one will live in the memory thumbup

I feel sorry for the folk who are yet to be born and will be teenagers in 2076 - They will have to listen to old geezers rambling on about the summer of 2026, just like the young folk of today have had to listen to old geezers going on about the summer of 1976 wink

Best thread of the year! bounce

Lovely chill on the air tonight (Beeston, 5 miles outside Nottingham). Just been for a 5 mile walk, beef stew done in the slow cooker for dinner, log burner will be lit later and I may have a couple of drinks to celebrate the cold weather later.

Heat lovers have had an epic summer, now it's time for long dark nights and bitterly cold winter hikes for me.

Good times.

In for the snow, would be a great way to see off 2026 after the great summer we’ve had.

Had a short summer in Canada , snow in May and a wet June , farmers are struggling to get the harvest finished now although mine was off in August as did Lentils this year . We’re getting a few frosty mornings with snow for Sunday and Thanksgiving Monday this weekend. Supposedly milder winter forecast , which means lots of freezing rain which decks everything up , much prefer a steady minus 10/25 which keeps the roads half decent. Still got all the patio furniture out as we’re trying to enjoy the last few warm days , pool never got filled this year either. See what happens eh

Haha same this week but we both know how it can change in an instant. Still got lots of leaves to fall yet so fingers crossed we’ll get some more half decent weather . Talk soon no doubt

So I asked Gemini to tell me when the last 10 years of winter threads started. It failed, so I asked ChatGPT which got 8 of the starting dates, all of the thread names and somehow failed with 2 of the dates, but I was able to help.

Season Start date
2016/17 17 Oct 2016
2017/18 11 Sep 2017
2018/19 20 Sep 2018
2019/20 1 Oct 2019
2020/21 2 Oct 2020
2021/22 27 Sep 2021
2022/23 16 Oct 2022
2023/24 10 Oct 2023
2024/25 10 Sep 2024
2025/26 16 Oct 2025

ChatGPT was very complimentary about some guy called 'Puggit'

There is absolutely nothing in the forecast to suggest we'll open the thread before 17th October.

So about normal then. Maybe just feels earlier as it's still quite pleasant out.
