Went through nine UK dealer adverts to test the usual "a 458 costs £50k more than a 488" line.

- Two 458 Spiders at roughly 22,000 miles: £234,950 and £235,000. A third, at £239,950 with 23,859 miles, has come off sale.
- Three 488 Spiders still listed at roughly 8,000 to 18,000 miles: £184,950 to £186,995 (a fourth, at £179,990, has come off sale).

So far the gap holds. Then two outliers:

- A 2014 458 Spider at Portland: £189,975 with 45,898 miles. Only £5,025 above the £184,950 488s.
- A 2017 488 Spider at Romans: £144,995 with 15,000 miles, around £40,000 under the other 488s.

Look closer and most of that £50k buys about 23,000 fewer miles. If you plan to use the car, that's a strange thing to pay for (low miles are worth more to the next owner than to you).

Europe tells the same story. On AutoScout24 and mobile.de the cheapest 458 Spider is €165,458, with 98,000 km. Filter both cars under 40,000 km and the gap shrinks to €19,000.

Where I land: a 458 Spider gets interesting below £195,000, with an inspection and history that back up the miles. Above £230,000 you're paying for the odometer.

Asking prices only, rechecked 6 October, not sales. Haven't seen the cars. Anyone know the story on the Romans car?
