The woman was identified as Daria Sh., a 27- or 28-year-old employee of the Irkutsk anti-plague institute, by the exiled news outlet Lyudi Baikala (People of Baikal) and pro-Kremlin broadcaster REN TV.

She reportedly told medical staff that she had accidentally broken a test tube containing live bacteria while collecting samples for testing.

She was hospitalized Tuesday with symptoms of severe pneumonia in Shelekhov, a town near the regional capital of Irkutsk. She was placed on a ventilator and died Thursday, according to the reports.

This is a very prominent story on Twitter/X (which seems to have become an echo chamber of apocalyptic doomsday scenarios). If you read much in there you can get yourself worried. Bioweapons, cover ups etc etc

I'm sure all will be fine despite the near 100% fatality rate, easily treatable with antibiotics apparently.

Ken Alibek's book Biohazard is worth reading to see what the Soviets were up to back in the day. He's always been sceptical that Russia has since completely dismantled its biological weapons research.

Not good.

If you can find a copy have a read of Russell Braddon's
"Year Of The Angry Rabbit"

It's about a super bug intentionally deployed that has unintended consequences

I read that when it first came out, a scary insight on the russian attitudes to life and it's own population.

Anyone watched The Wargame on Sky?

Not technically related to this thread but is a simulation of how the UK authorities might respond if Putin decided to go to war with us (with people like Penny Mordaunt and Michael Gove playing the roles of our leadership).

Add in Richard Preston's non-fiction work for further nightmares.

I'm sure it didn't escape from a lab, it's at BSL-3, almost as high as a dentists waiting room. Probably imported rats at the local GUM superstore.

Utopia is available on Tubi.

Free to watch.

I watched it again recently and had to remind myself it was written pre covid.

ETA - Annoying - just checked again and it looks like it is no longer on Tubi

(AI) comparison to covid:

Seems that by virtue of it being decidedly far nastier than Covid, its biological traits make it much harder to transmit on a large scale.
