I am selling a phone on facebook marketplace and got a message on a post i placed on facebook stating

hey! I’m interested in your Iphone 12 pro 256gb unlocked £180, I couldn’t reach you on facebook kindly text me on messenger thank you.

I then messaged them and they want me to post it to them after they send the money via bank transfer. I assumed they were friends with the person they responded to but turns out they are not (they didn’t say they were i presumed).

They are no wanting me to move onto WhatsApp as apparently this is easier for them to contact me on.

Just seems fishy to me what do you peeps think?

Yeah thought as much. Very good at calling my bluff though as they said they are based in Bristol and i genuinely am going there on Wednesday so offered to drop it off. They have given me an address bit with a name that doesn’t match theirs, why did they give me a name anyway??

Don’t use marketplace. Find your very local “buying and selling” FB groups as while not perfect, you can at least ensure that they are very local and some semblance of existence.

Nearly 100% of people who have ever used the word "kindly" are scammers.

i had something like this recently. I was buying a phone on ebay. The seller appeared local, but it soon became apparent they were in/near Bristol after they gave me their address. No worries, let's arrange for postage... I sent the money via paypal goods and services and that was the last I heard.

I didn't receive any tracking info and that's when the alarm bells starting ringing. The seller blocked me after I questioned it. I checked the paypal details and as if by magic, the details were completely different - including the email address. Apparently they hijack someone's fb and paypal accounts, then change the details so they can withdraw. So it all looks legit until it isnt. I wasn't worried as I was covered by Paypal, but there's nothing that can be done about these people as once they've blocked you, you can''t even report the fb account.

I'd advise you to use paypal or perhaps something like revolut to receive the funds. That way you can withdraw the funds into your bank account without them reversing the charge.

If they pay by bank transfer there's no redress.

Whats the issue

Id rather take the phone outside, go to my tool cabinet, get my heaviest ball peen hammer and then proceed to smash the living daylights out of said phone before then driving to the local tip/recycling centre and throwing its remains with as much vigour and energy into the WEE skip……or look like a crackhead and take it to a CashConverters?

Unfortunately not true anymore. There are several threads on here where money paid directly in a Bank account was subsequently removed. If that's what you meant by redress.

I have just sold a low cost car on E Bay £1500. I had a scam contact in a day about exporting the car and collection agents etc . I then got another one from a Buyer 240 miles away wanting to send a collection fellow. This scam was trying to collect my details. Name, address dob and Bank Account. I managed to stop at first name and post code . It was very professionally done and I am cross they started to get me . Yesterday morning I got 4 separate requests to view to car all from postcodes about 10 miles from each other but 70 miles from me . They had similar phrases in the messages all came in within an hour.

Yesterday afternoon I got a message to view the car . Met a perfectly nice local to me young couple sold the car for cash. Did the V5 online with them and they signed a receipt no guarantee, return, sold as seen etc . I have been on E bay for 20 plus years. It has really changed.
It's the first time I have felt a bit vulnerable to the bad guys.

Problem i have is the battery is 75% so it drops from £140 to £45 and becomes not worth saving and keeping as a spare to take to the beach.
