The idea isn't too bad, it's a common enough idea on lots of machines as Aquastop or whatever.
Problem is their implentation is cheap crap. A good solenoid valve should never leak, though I have had one burst.
But even the 'good' ones tend to fail, often by getting stuck.

I've just done some big boy work on my plumbing for mains feed with a stopcock replacement and then a water softner and the whole design of mains is rather flawed and lacking any technology still.
-We could get better identification of leaks at the outside mains line if it had decent monitoring on there available to us. We have a shared stopcock box, no way im jumping in there all the time to see if I've got leaks. A link up via wifi would be good one day.
-Water companies on new builds should be seeking leak detection solutions full stop, costs the insurers a lot of money
-My mains has a drain next to it, Why don't mains that come into a property have a drain off solution beneath it if it ever bursts/leaks at this point?
One thing I'll be doing as well is turning my mains into the property off at the stopcock. Never thought about this before but I know my luck!

Ours has been in place for 10 years. No issues.
We have used them in our new build supported living 300 or so apartments per year since 2010. No major issues, the odd installation error but you get that with plumbing anyway
Fair enough - you clearly have much more experience with them than me. Obviously I got a duff one. A browse of the online reviews suggests I'm far from the only one though. We have used them in our new build supported living 300 or so apartments per year since 2010.
