We have a new world champion in world motorcycling. And he is from these shores.
His name is Robert Lambert and he won the speedway GP world title last night in emphatic fashion in Poland.
Beating the bloke that was won it six times and beating him very well.
He had a rough start to the year but the final few rounds put a crazy run together where he was second or won every round, to swoop in and take the title.

I used to go to Speedway way back when Cradley were one of the top teams, shows my age! It's a shame how the coverage has dwindled away from terrestrial TV to the satellite schedules. Ch4 (or maybe Ch 5?) had highlights when Tai Woffinden was champion.

Sadly it is a TNT thing, it has moved from various platforms a bit like WRC. But the new owners seem to be more focused on expansion, there was a British round shown on ITV4 a few months back and next year the series is going to Australia for the first time in years.
It is a sport struggling a lot in the UK, venues often in inner cites and towns are all gone really as land is worth a fortune and locals dont like noise, dust etc, but there are still venues running. Oxford oddly the ity that hates any vehicle has one! Sport is huge in Poland, Sweden and other parts of Europe, it has just died a bit here.
Which makes a lad winning the world title such big news, sadly he now lives in Poland too!

it's a partially dedicated sports channel, BTCC is on there. I usually have to use itvx to catch up on the WRC, go Elfyn!Speedway, there's a blast from the past.
Used to go see the Leicester Lions back in the 70's/80's mainly because, at the time my mate lived next door to Ray Wilson, the team captain and he let us kids sit on one of his bikes in his garden.
Memories of being shingle-blasted in the corners but the stadium/track was demolished in the '80s to build houses which called an end to it, they did recently build a new one nearby though I've never been.

Sadly minority sports go un noticed in this country, look at David Knight for a prime example, 3 time world enduro chamnpion and won the US version multiple times yet if you didn't know his name, you wouldn't have a clue.

Leicester are still going, you should go along and support your local track maybe.
AS for Knighter, seen him several times, bloke is a nutcase but a proper hero to many. Some of those enduro events get bloody bog crowds actually, far bigger than speedway does here.
Just hope this lad gets some recognition for what he has done. Woffy did, his testimonial is next week at Northampton.

Yes, congratulations, Lambert was untouchable come the end of the season. I sort of laughed in the spring when a boy from work said he fancied him for the title. It's been a weird season with Tai retiring and Bewley and Freddy being out for so long. It might have been different with a full house but none the less a cracking achievement.

k me I've got right into speedway in the last 4-5 years. Id seen a few meets but my o/h who's Polish took me to the SGP meet at Gorzow and that was pretty much me hooked. Its like a football match over there.
I was at Glasgow Tigers on Friday, I normally end up there every other Friday. They still have a decent following.
I even tried a speedway bike, it was fking horrible, nothing like a motorbike, but cracking fun.

I switched the final on just in time to see the last race Saturday; it was cool to see.
I used to go watch the Ipswich Witches a few years ago. Almost as fun as watching the speedway was watching the dubious dress-sense of a lot of the spectators

Ipswich have the British GP next year, you should go if you can.
Poland is the mecca like Denmark used to be now, most riders any good primarily race there, none of the top guys race in the UK now sadly really, the sport is struggling a lot with loss of venues and clubs dying. In the last few years we have lost all Birmingham venues, Peterborough, Swindon, Coventry, Stoke and many others, we have gained a few yes, but it's on its arse in real terms.

Yeah, I saw that I was kinda gutted when it was announced, I normally did the double header at Manchester that was brilliant, then in Poland the next round two weeks later. I'm thinking of Latvia next year, or Prague tbh as it's probably cheaper and easier than driving 8 hours to Ipswich and trying to get digs.
