Sport mode fighting me
Discussion
I've been aware of this a few times. Vanquish 2 6-speed when in Sport mode, sometimes when I take my foot off the accelerator and brake the car doesn't want to slow down as rapidly as normal. It's almost as if the engine is still pulling or the brakes aren't working properly. After a second or two it seems normal. Any explanation for this please?
This phenomenon has been discussed here before, not explicitly for VH3 Vanquish though. But maybe the same or related issue nevertheless?

Interesting, thanks. It only happens in Sports mode, and then only occasionally and only for a moment.
Today's example was when I had to lose 25mph fairly rapidly when a van pulled into my lane unexpectedly. The time before, I was braking to take a fairly sharp corner.
I don't use Sport mode much but if the problem recurs and lasts longer then pressing 'N' seems to be the answer.
The car has never accelerated on its own just when driving along.

Or would selecting Neutral result in engine runaway?
If I remember the article correctly, no. I seem to recall that once the car is in neutral the stability system stops trying to adjust the speed of the wheel with the faulty reluctor ring as it "knows" it no longer has drive to do it, so the engine will drop to idle if there's no throttle. Technically you should be able to stop the car on the brakes, as there should be more stopping power available than the engine can generate, but you'd have 4 litres of turbocharged V8 fighting you all the way.

6 litres of n/a V12 in this instance...I experimented on the way back from a car show today. What actually happens, or happened today, is that when you come off the accelerator and hit the brake, the car does two violent downshifts and it feels as if the surge pushes you along. Could the BR remap done by the previous owner be responsible?

Silly me - no idea why I immediately thought of a 2C car.I experimented on the way back from a car show today. As for the remap causing the problem? Who knows - depends what was done. Is this "push" you experience regular, consistent and repeatable? Or does it seem to vary on the weather, day of the month, how the car feels? I ask because I'd expect an issue created by a remap to behave the same way every time, whereas something like a faulty reluctor would more likely be inconsistent and intermittent

That's fair logic. I'll do some more tests next time I'm out and report back!
mine is the 8 speed box mate, but i think the same logic applies.... it was explained to me that under harder braking the gearbox triggers to downshift more aggressively in anticipation of harder acceleration out of the braking. i have noticed this myself and this might be the sensation you're experiencing? all perfectly normal and sounds fantastic with the windows down!

Indeed, and that's when I became really aware of what the car was doing at the weekend. I don't mind rapid downshifts but it seems to add too much throttle, hence the surge against the brakes. What it means is that in anticipation of this, I'll start come off the power earlier and start braking earlier, exactly the opposite of what the gearbox gods planned...
It actually makes no sense because hard braking might be for an emergency stop, and the last thing you want is a car that tries to keep going!

ahhhh got you! yeah mine definitely doesn't do that! it feels ready to explode into hard acceleration but i'm not fighting the car through the braking process...It actually makes no sense because hard braking might be for an emergency stop, and the last thing you want is a car that tries to keep going!

I had this on my 2007 Vantage, turned out to be a Hub Speed / ABS sensor requiring replacement causing the "surging" you describe. No errors on dash - had to be code read at a specialist. Hope it's a straightforward fix.
Thanks; it's only recently had its annual service so it can wait until next time. Does AMDS tell them which hub it is?I don't use Sport a great deal but on some roads without it the car barely keeps up with normal traffic unless you use a large helping of accelerator! I would call standard mode 'Eco' and put a midway one between them.
I have had both the vanquish series 2 6 speed and now a series 2 "S" can you check your actual speed when doing the braking and downshift. Perhaps due to the Carbon Ceramic brakes it may give the sensation you are accelerating slightly particularly when they are cold and once they warm a little they then grab which can make you feel like the car has accelerated.
