the adjustment rod for my mower deck snapped off. Its a bit like a tie rod - its got maybe 40mm of m10 at both ends (reverse threaded at one end), the middle is a hex, the overall bar is ~340mm long. I'd prefer to replace it like for like because one of the heads that threads onto it is deep inside the mower and I don't want to take it all apart.

I basically need a really long one of these

on the one I have the middle bit is 260mm long (rather than the threaded bits) but I don't suppose it matters, as long as there's a thread at each end.

Gemini thought its called a turnbuckle, but those all appear to have female ends. I've tried searching for tie rods but they're all model specific, so I'd spend forever trying to find one with the right ends (I think).

so what's it called?

double end stud or hex double end stud. Check that it has the correct handed threads!

If you don't need a lot of LH thread, you might put something together using the shorter items suggested above, plus a 'connecting nut' and a length of common threaded bar/studding?

You can buy long connection nuts which are LH thread one end RH the other.

Try ebay double threaded LH RH

yeah I might be able to make one out of some threaded bar (1 big with each thread direction) and a female bit in the middle.

You could always buy a normal turnbuckle like you have found and cut off the ends, lock the threads extended with the locknuts and that should work.

What make is the mower? It may well be worth looking at LS Engineers who have a vast range of spares for all manner of machinery. https://www.lsengineers.co.uk/tt-transport-and-tow...
I have used them for chainsaw, strimmer, mower spares on numerous occasions and rate them highly.

Take a photo of it and ask Gemini to find you a supplier. Add the model of the lawnmower and the length.

AI can be really good at identifying and finding parts.

The mower in question is an Allen Mustang. I think they maybe sold a dozen of them in the 80s so spares, or even documentation arent really a thing.

Why not just weld it back together?

Should be easy enough to make one with a bit of 10mm rod and a couple of cheap thread dies from Amazon? Just drill out a 10mm nut and slide it over the road to the mid point and weld in place to give the spanner turn but...
