I find with sports mode the car can be chucked about the lanes quite well. But comparing it with another BMW say the M3 Hmm...
I know it sounds a daft thing to say but it does 'feel' big although saying that it handles very well IMO. On corners, dare I say better than the TVR did (I always had this fear of going up a hedge).
Shame you are not closer otherwise I would let you take it for a run

pwig, fwiw I recently got an E38 7 series, a 740 with most options fitted, and it's brilliant. Not a V12 I know but the V8 is sweet. It cost the original owner about 17 times what I paid, it gives effortless performance in a quality environment and a sports button means it shifts even better in every sense when the need arises. There's 30+ mpg on the motorway and it's not long run in after 88k miles in 10 years. Tempted to say 'should have done this sooner' but then these cars have become a lot cheaper recently.
According to my 750iL owners manual.
0..80 times in Kilometres. Values in brackets=auto box
728i/L 6.0 (6.9)
730i/L 5.9 (7.1)
740i/L 5.1 (5.4)
750i/L (4.8)
Standing-start kilometre
728i/L 29.7 (30.5)
730i/L 29.2 (30.3)
740i/L 26.9 (27.6)
750i/L (26.6)
But has anyone seen a MANUAL 740?

Any buying tips from owners?
After asking the same question on PH, yes, also got a lot more from various sources after buying an E38 740 with 88k on the clock. Apart from the 'usual' engine / autobox / bodywork stuff for all used cars that can eat money, and consumables for a heavy car (brake pads, tyres) try this dozen:
1. front and back suspension, top mounts, bushes
2. engine mountings (2 engine / 1 gearbox)
3. water pump / thermostat housing
4. viscous fan not cutting in when hot (leak?) or jamming (duck)
5. radiator neck has been known to snap
6. oil pump comes loose and can fall off
7. crankcase ventilation valve
8. switches (worn)
9. tired front door locks not popping up using remote
10. rear seat elbow rest
11. loose front grille(s)
12. glovebox closure and internal trim can be a bit iffy
Good luck. ETA - delighted with mine, didn't intend to put anyone off ... the list isn't compulsory for every car
