Argentina seem to be posturing and potentially signalling that they may attempt a grab of the Falkland Islands.

Seemingly empowered by Trump.

Thoughts on what will happen?

fk all will happen, they've got no ability to do anything.

It's just the standard comfort zone for Argentinian politicians when their popularity goes to st. Milei was saying very different things before the polls went the wrong way.

The people I'm actually wary of on this topic are all sat in Whitehall given how they've already yielded on other things.

If Argentina want to miss out on oil revenue, more fool them.

They've heard about the plans for the Chagos Islands

The last time I was in Argentina they were really struggling, you were not allowed to draw more than $70 or $80 dollars a day out of an ATM. Doubt it's improved that much between then and now.

Trump's response was entirely predictable.

Don't worry, our battle ready defence forces that are absolutely fully funded and staffed (after Starmer came in and said he was putting the country on a war footing)

Oh...

Maybe we could send one of those undefended, fighterless white elephants down there.

Agreed but yet more pointless, childish st-stirring from Trump.

Are they struggling? 430% of the population have a YT Premium subscription. Their president owns a chainsaw; has anyone here ever won a political debate with a tree surgeon? Doubt it, arborists are known to be the driving force behind every superpower's think tanks.

I know the default response is to point at their list of outdated, unmaintained and mothballed equipment and laugh, but unfortunately it's possible to cause a lot of misery and suffering even with such equipment. Dildo Baggins starting another conflict also edges us closer to WW3. But he doesn't want war, he wants the Falklands oil.

The Commander in Diapers doing his "well the limeys didn't help me when I started an unwinnable war, harrumph, so why should I support them if my mate attacks them? Did I mention he's got a chainsaw?" line doesn't help matters, of course.

Just as well cause do we have any ability to stop em? i know there are typhoons at mount pleasant but maybe we need to be sending a carrier and a big hairy destroyer down there

Their armed forces can't achieve anything. They don't have the equipment to do anything even against our oldest Typhoons and limited air defence systems. The Royal Navy are letting the team down with a lack of capable ships or submarines, but a C17 with a few Wildcat helicopters would sink whatever flotilla the Argentines can scrape together.

But, not having access to Argentina's port facilities probably makes extracting oil around the Falklands more expensive. Montevideo is a long, long way away.

Appreciate it comes with the usual caveats, but looking at Wikipedia they have 6 F16's and some rowing boats.

If push came to shove, I doubt the UK could do much about it, it's not 1982 anymore, our navy has been pared down to the bone, like the army. We have Russia and Putin to worry about at the moment. Best we could do is send a submarine down there to scare them off.

I detest Trump, but here, he certainly has a point.

I know this will be an unpopular opinion, but how would we like it if the Argies controlled the Isle of Wight and all the oil round it?

As for Israel drilling down there, that's like a red rag to a bull.

Interesting to see how this pans out.

Labour : “£1 billion cash up front plus an annual £1 billion payment for the next 20 years and we’ll even pay for Special Delivery for the keys?”

Yes, thanks for that, Denmark.

Selling weaponry to a country who have spent decades shouting about their aims to annex the territory of one of your allies, and on one occasion actually invaded, is not really on.

Aren't the Falklands about 250 times as far from Argentina than the IoW is from England?

I can imagine exactly why some people in that part of the world might be upset by that sort of thing.

The correct analogy is how would we like it if Argentina controlled Iceland, and had done since before we existed as a country, so Iceland was already fully-populated by Argentinians.

Fact of the matter is that the province Argentina wants the Falklands to be part of (Tierra del Fuega) should be Chilean if you want to look at the geographical argument. So arguably our friends in Santiago have a better claim to it.
