Automatic, Low road noise, not low ground clearance, £12k?

- Wife insists on automatic, she is a very new driver
- We do mostly road trips from our place near Reading to the Highlands (Isle of Skye and further north)
- It will be nice to have just a bit of ground clearance. I don't do any off-roading but the roads up north are sometimes pretty bad
- Road noise is very important. On our long trips, it's actually tiring to listen to music all the time. So, we need something pretty hushed
- Has to be decent reliability
- Don't care about sports but it's important that it feels composed in windy mountain roads and have a bit of grunt for the uphill
Initially, I was looking at a T-Roc but hearing that it's an "over-stressed Golf on stilts" and that the gearbox is "jerky at urban speeds" - but not sure what this means and if it's even objectively true.
So, started looking into XC40 but:
- Volvo reliability and, since it's a "premium" car, parts cost is going to be tragic?
- Reading the forum here, I am seeing 30MPG? I am not penny-wise about every drop of fuel but I was hoping to get high 40's at 70 MPH?

All road versions of a4/a6, skoda octavia, maybe superb and the e class. Slightly raised ride height and some body "protection".

MK2 or current Tiguan. More refined than smaller VW suvs and than Skoda and seat equivalents.
Ideal for those very long journeys would be a MK2 sel with ergo comfort seats and either 2.0tdi or 1.5tsi. we have one in the family since new 7 years ago, has just been handed down to one of our children.

MG ZS hybrid new for about 16k. You should get a used 2025 model in your price range
Test Drove one a few months back for my father that was 10months old and had covered 30k miles. There wasn't a squeak or rattle from it. Brilliant LED headlights and was pretty comfortable too.
The guy that owned it was commuting back and forth to Dublin on a daily basis.
They also come with a 7yr warranty and will easily do 50mpg.
Honestly couldnt fault it and wanted to hate it and steer him towards a Toyota yaris cross.

It's been perfectly reliable for us.
Economy is going to vary with the engine but we've got a T5 and see 42mpg+ on a long trip.
They are pleasantly quiet. I regularly drive around the Surrey section of the M25 which is cement rather than tarmac and it's the quietest modern car I've had on that surface. Not having low profile tyres helps.
The XC40 has been out a while now and has been very popular. They come in a wide variety of engines, trim levels and colours so you should be able to find something suitable.
