Collecting my new ATTO 3 on Sept 1st
They have today emailed and ask if I want any of the following, there were full details, just putting titles.

1. Asset Protect: £594 for 3 years - SAP (GAP/RTI) Insurance.

2. Lifeshine: Cost £299
LifeShine is a premium vehicle protection system by Autoglym

3. Smart Protect: £439 for 3 years.
This insurance provides coverage for the cost of repairs to minor dents, light scratches, scuffs, and chips.

I usually don’t take up these offers, any thoughts on them ?

Personally for me I would want some kind of GAP insurance, what type depends on how you are owning it, PCP, Lease, cash purchase etc.

I wouldn't be buying the other products they are trying to sell, if you want paint protection pay a good detailer to do a ceramic coating instead because i'll guarantee the "detailer" the dealership use won't do a proper job of applying it in any case. I did have it applied to my current car by BMW but only because they essentially gave it me for free after I declined it, I think they had a target to hit on it.

I'd take the GAP but not at those prices!

That is pretty expensive so get some online quotes first.

The other stuff is just snake oil and won't be applied correctly in any case. Save your money.

Get GAP but from a 3rd party company (far cheaper)

Don't bother with the rest

IMHO

You could probably get the lot from a 3rd party for less than the price of one of those.

When I bought my BMW, the dealer also offered all this (high commission) crap...but as I was repeatedly saying no I was also bringing up a quote from ALA (other providers are available) for similar products at 1/3rd of the price to show him.

Salesman claimed he'd never heard about those sort of companies before.

Good idea, but you can buy gap insurance on the open market. The big comparison sites offer it, start there.

You can buy the lifeshine stuff from eBay for about £20, eg, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/158056994281

Makes you wonder how that's possible. Almost like lots of people pay £300 and the stuff never gets applied to the car.

Over £400 buys a lot of smart repairs. You can buy a policy on the open market for less if you want, I personally wouldn't bother.

You can buy each of those products cheaper elsewhere though personally I wouldn’t buy any of them.

Agree especially with the GAPP cover and make sure you get the return to invoice cover.

Paid off when my car was written off after 18 months of ownership.

1) Try ALA instead for the Gap - I would imagine around the £300 mark for 3 years although your own Insurance probably covers the first 12 months anyway.
2)The Autoglym stuff isn't the worst but its the time taken ( or rather not taken ) that dictates how good this may be.They will aslo just coat however the body work is left following PDI.
3) Personally wouldn't bother.

GAP usually isn't necessary for the first 12 months, as mentioned above, depending on your insurance company. Most of them include a clause that if a car is 'written off' when under 12 months old, they will replace it. It's probably why insurance on brand new cars is so much, not just because of their actual value. Mine dropped over 25% at 12 months old, although there are many factors of course.

You might have a problem getting GAP after 6 months of purchasing a new car though. I though the Financial Ombusman had massively reduced the number of GAP insurers because they were very uncompetitive. GAP for 2 years for a Tesla is £99, Ping through Moneysavingexpert or ALA google for discounts.

Wrt the Gap insurance try Direct Gap based in Hebden Bridge - they do a 4 year policy which starts after 12 months for brand new cars if your insurance covers you for the first 12 months - has to be taken out at the time of purchase.

Great service and paid out with no issues which is more important than a good price. Cheaper than dealer

If car insurance covers first year.
Can you get GAP just for years 2 & 3 or do they require you to start at date of purchase

As above, I have done that and IIRC you have to buy the policy within 90 days of purchase.

Used ALA for my GAP insurance when my wifes car was written off. She had it from the manufacturer thankfully and then remembered I didn’t so shopped around and ALA were a fair price and have a good rep from the research I did. Peace of mind at the end of the day. Annoying paying it but after what happened to her car it shows how easily something can happen and certainly worth having.

Does the smart protect include wheels?

I paid £300 for a year smart repair policy from Honda and it paid for itself after 12 months!

All these are just a way of salesmen making more money from the gullible. Gap is probably worth it but as said above get your own.

Dealer extras: the no-BS version

Three add-ons. Some questions. You alone will know the answers.

1. GAP?Does your insurer actually give new-for-old for 1 2 years? Big discount on the car? Cash or finance? High-risk postcode + drive like a berk combo? Too many variables. Only you know.

2. Lifeshine?Paint + interior fabrics, insurance-backed if you stain the seats or etch the paint. Keeping it forever or 12 months? Like a shiny car - do you enjoy wash and polishing, or not really? Dog? Kids? Eat and drink in it? Again: only you know.

3. Minor damage cover (~£12/month)?Car-park dents, scuffs, scrapes, stone chips. Up to 20 repairs, no excess, no hit to no-claims. Local hospital doctors all take it their cars get bashed daily. One or two knocks and it s paid for itself. Fastidious fixer or meh, it ll be fine ? You already know.

No lecture. Just the questions.
