I'm looking to replace a toilet in the near future, I've done a fair bit of DIY but the first time changing a toilet. The waste pipe is out of a wall. Anything to measure first or get beforehand?

Height of pipe to floor? Never done it either, but we have a loo here on a 1inch plinth to make it line up!

I replaced a toilet a couple of years ago… even with my meagre skills a doddle. A flexible soil pipe is the answer to a mismatch in heights. Everything else just fitted.

I ve replaced a few. As mentioned you can get a flexible fitting or there are connectors available with different off sets to allow for height differences.

Once removed, measure the id of the waste pipe as from memory, there are a couple of different sizes.

I'd suggest keeping it simple, if (and if) you need a flexi then to go for a Mcapline one as they are rock solid.

If you're lucky the measurements should line up to the new bog.

Thanks, I'll measure up the outlet height and see if there's one closest to that.

Remember to have a good pee+dump before you start biggrin

Years ago my dad had to fix the toilet, and half way through the job we all went out in the car to town to use the public ones.
These days most houses will have more than one so you should be ok, unless you're in a '70s semi like we were.

Dimensions to pan outlet will be the same so if it fits now it will be fine.

Use a mcalpine pan connector either bent or straight again dimension will be standard

If you want belt snd braces if it's a close coupled pan and cistern throw away the internals that come with it and buy the fluid master kit, it contains fill valve syphon and pretty much everything you need, the fill valve will have a brass thread and if you ever need to change either in the future you won't be having to take the cistern off they just un clip

I had two issues when changing toilets.

1) New cisterns are smaller than old ones so I've had to build a support bracket

2) The inlet pipe on the old system was on the other side of the cistern and required a bit of pipe to connect

Apart from that they're a doddle to swap over.

Changed two in our house and a couple for friends in other houses.

The first 3 went fine, helps if mainly if there s a valve that lets you switch off the water inlet.

The most recent one in our main bathroom was more troublesome as firstly the soil outlet of the new toilet was at a different level and longer than the old toilet, so needed a new flexi pipe. Secondly the inlet was on the other side of the cistern so pipe inlet was causing a problem. I had enough so called in a plumber to finish it. £100 well spent.

Main tools are a sponge, old dishcloth and empty yogurt pot to empty the cistern and the toilet, plus a plastic carrier bag and lots of tape to seal the soil pipe whilst it’s out.

Replace the pan connector at the same time. They get grim inside...
