I'm just about to move to a new place and I'm sorting utilities etc. out. Are there other options aside from BT for land line rental? There is no cable in the area (which is what I've been using until now). I don't actually make calls on the land line, but will need it for ADSL.

I'm moving from NTL, which I'm quite happy with. I'd have it again if only the development I'm moving to was wired for it. As it is they have communal Sky dishes and BT landlines. As I don't use the home phone, but of course need it for ADSL, I'm trying to minimise the line rental cost.

You cant put ADSL on an NTL landline. Unless you live in an area supporting local loop unbundling you need a BT line

BT it is then. How much is basic line rental? Their website is unfathomable!
