Reasonable cost for a sandwich lunch?

Went for a walk along the river with the Mrs yesterday stopped at a cafe for a bite to eat. Sandwich each. I had a bottle of Peroni she had a coke. Tapped my phone without looking at the bill. Checked my bank later and it was £44
In fairness the sandwiches were delicious, mine was probably the nicest I've had in a long time she reported her was just as good. Came with perfectly cooked chips and some salad on the side.
Maybe I'm too old/out of touch but £44 for a sandwich lunch has to be taking the piss. My own fault for not paying attention when I paid, lesson learned.

- where were you - London?
- what was in the sandwich?
- Were chips and extra for the order?
- Did it include tip?
- was it served on a nice plate with cutlery?
- was the word artisan anywhere?
- did the table have a tablecloth?

two weeks ago I paid £50.50 for one english, one veggie breakfast, 2 coffees and 2 waters. Breakfasts and coffees average at best.
I felt mugged off at the time and it pisses me off typing it out again.
Does seem pretty steep but we could do with some context. You said by the river...
Was it the Tees in Middlesborough or the Thames in Richmond?!?
I have adjusted how I perceive value of food and drink to take into account where I am. Presumably because I'm getting old, but if that was in a nice, quiet cafe with no neck tattoos in sight with a nice view over the river, then I would be totally happy with £44.

We're in Chester. When the weather's nice the riverside gets very busy, presumably the retailers make hay while the sun shines.Was it the Tees in Middlesborough or the Thames in Richmond?!?
My sandwich was beef brisket hers was a fish finger sandwich. Her fish fingers were clearly home made rather than from a packet as they weren't uniform size.
Nothing to be done other than avoid the place in future, as nice as it was there has to be some limit.
Location is a big factor. In the Lake District 23 years ago, we looked at a menu outside a Hotel - sandwiches at £12, so we moved on. The price at some places here in Norfolk is now £12, but still some very good quality to be had as low as £9.

Last year we paid about £50 for a sandwich lunch on Whitby harbour. 1 x fresh crab sandwich, 1 x cod goujon sandwich, 1 x chunky chips and 2 glasses of Muscadet.
I also noted, on a run out, that a fish finger sandwich at Britain's highest pub was over £18 last year.

I going to say its probably £12 for 2 drinks. £14 each sandwich (with chips) + 10% service charge. £44 total.

I say this a tight northerner who begrudges paying excessive prices. However what grinds my gears is paying for crap or even mediocre food when eating at what appears a good eatery.
Imagine choosing the same location, paying £25-30 for the same meal , and out pops two sandwiches on slightly stale sliced supermarket white bread, filled with plasic sliced beef and a couple of undercooked soggy frozen fish fingers.
Yep, the £44 sandwich sounds much more preferable now.

£25 each for breakfast, coffee and water, seems quite a lot, but didn't you look at the price list/menu first?

Based on the description of the plates on their menu I would guess at a price of around £15 for each sandwich and £10 for the drinks plus a 10% service charge would be £44.

I must be slow on the uptake as I hadn't worked out that it was going to be 50 quid, even though I knew it wasn't going to be cheap.

It's expensive in there. We had breakfast there maybe 18 omnths ago now, and it was good, but leaving I did think "Bloody hell - how much?". As I result we've not been back.

It was a cafe in a posh house furnishing store. I am taking it as a punishment for becoming the person who goes looking for carpet on a weekend. Medway city industrial estate for those in Kent that fancy a decent and reasonable full english.
I won't be going back - if it had been exceptionally nice I wouldn't have minded but it was average at best. Had obviously been cooked and kept warm.
