What do you all use/carry and deem reasonable and proportionate security measures for when you're out n about?

Mine:

1- Alarmed disc lock - front:
Easiest way to remove this (as other disc locks) is to cut the disc in two places with an angle grinder, but its loud and unpleasant.

2- litelok Dlock - through rear wheel/disc/hub:
Only realistic way a scrote will remove this is an angle grinder, but they'll need a lot of cutting discs, time and batteries. Most wouldnt bother, I think.

3- 14mm chain - street furniture to Dlock.
Noose chain so usable length vs weight is ok, just. This prevents the "chuck it in a van" method. Chain could still be cut and chucked in a van, but at that point, you're sort of battling against the tide really, especially for portable methods, and they'll still have to fight against the other items. 14mm is big enough to deter all but the most persistent feckers IMO.

If I'm popping into a shop for only a few minutes and/or have sight of the bike then I'll be 1 only.

If more than about 10mins, in the evening or I'll be away from the bike (ie going into the town centre and need to go to various shops) itll be 1,2&3.

I dont bother with the steering lock, it's by far the easiest thing to overcome and the most expensive/troublesome to fix/replace. It'll just get kicked off in the first 10seconds of any attempted theft, even if they ultimately fail to take the bike.

At work it's a locked, secure, gated bike courtyard, well out of the way of any visibility, and theres 24hr manned security etc.

Nothing , I’ve probably been lucky but never had a bike stolen and as far as I’m aware never had any attempted theft of any of them , obviously if one does get stolen I’ll have to review things security wise .

I’m the same. I don’t lock them up at home either, they’re in a brick built garage behind a locked gate though.

When I go away with mates, I’m always quite surprised when someone pulls out a chain, it’s just not something I really think about.

Theres three other factors i suppose.

The bike, location and usage.

Im a scooter rider. My previous scoot had one failed attempted theft as far as I'm aware. In broad daylight, in view of other folks (but not me). Thankfully there was no real damage to it.

For me its a tool. I commute on it, go to the shops on it, go into town etc. If I need to go anywhere on my own and dont need a tonne of storage, I take the scoot.

I know for many people cars are a tool and two wheels are a hobby/play thing, i'm the other way round (currently).

I have a 2012 BMW gs adv and never use anything even when touring abroad. I think the scrotes want nice new blingy things that are easy to sell the parts off. I've probably jinks it now!

Someone I knew had their new Chinese scooter stolen from Glasgow, earlier this year.
They had gone into their Doctors to collect a prescription, came out & it had vanished. They naively / stupidly told their ins co, that they hadn’t fitted a lock to it, so the scummy ins co Refused to pay out. They are now being chased for the ££ balance owing on it…

That was silly, and a massive shame.

I told my insurance co that I only have a disclock. I use it every time as it takes about 5s to fit and stores nicely in my glovebox. That way its covered regardless.

That’s why I don’t declare any security when I’m out. Just my luck it would get nicked the time I didn’t put anything on it.

I’ve done quotes with and without and in my case it made absolutely no difference.

I just have an alarmed disc lock that I use when out and about. Regards insurance, I never specify any security devices when taking out the policy so that if it gets nicked I can't be blamed for not fitting them!

Blimey. I take the keys out of the ignition.
The other week I forgot and it sat on my drive for a week with the keys in it. Only realised when I couldn't find them.

I do tend to lock the steering, but realise that's only a minor inconvenience to a scrote.
I have a Google tracker hidden on the bike in a difficult to find location. Yes, I know they're not infallible either...but it might give a clue especially if they've hidden the bike for retrieval later. For a fiver which is all they cost, why wouldn't you?
Not much else you can do...if they want your bike, they'll have it. Disk locks are pointless since they'll just angle grind them off in broad daylight even in a crowd.

Alarmed disc lock if I'm out and about mine has a thin cable I can link to it which stops someone just throwing it in a van

Yes both can be defeated but so can my front door lock and I still lock that every night

Which is precisely the environment from where my 6 month old GSXR1000 was taken, 20 years ago. I don’t fret about it now but I’m 100% sure the security must have had something to do with it, as the CCTV for that day mysteriously became unavailable when they were asked for it.

I pretty much have the same setup as the OP, disc lock, then litelock chain and D lock. Plus a tracker tag as well.

If I'm going into the city then it's the above, a Hiplock D lock goes on as well.

When I was 17 I chained by DT175 to a railing in a car park in SE London. This was 40 years ago . When I came back a big gap was in railings and no bike .

Early 80s when I was 17/18, I had a mate that had a CBX but not a boggo standard like mine it was a rather nice Moto Martin.
We were up in Northwood for a week and on the first night it was stolen despite being chained to a lamp post, they just used a petrol disc cutter to chop off a (obviously) live lamp post.

I'll always put some sort of lock on and the steering lock. Everything has a monimoto on it set to maximum sensitivity so the fking around with breaking the steering lock will get me a phone call and the other lock will get me enough time to get back to the bike.

To be fair anything other than just brushing past the bike will set it off so I've even had calls when people have been messing around with stuff on the bike.

Its all about location, I avoid going to places that I think are risky. When I'm staying somewhere overnight I pick a small town or village and a hotel not in the center. Reason is I only use a disclock and gamble on my bike not being the most desirable in the area. It's a level of risk I am happy with.

The thing is with that there London and it's suburbs is that they don't care if it's desirable because all they want it for is drug runs and robbing, if they're out looking for 2 wheeled transport and yours is easy pickings then they'll use it. I assume most UK cities are the same
