Well he opposed the Islamic fundamentalists in Iraq and arguably prevented a fundamentalist movement from ever gaining much ground there.

I think he may have been initially supported by the West due to his opposition to both communism and fundamentalism.

He was attacked and removed from power by the US under a false premise (WMD). He posed no real threat to the US but was falsely accused of involvement with 9-11.

Security from crime and terrorism for the average Iraqi citizen has declined markedly since his downfall.

That might go down well with, or at least embarass, the US a little during the trial.

Of course it's not likely to get him off the hook for being a mass murdering tyrant, but some defence is possible, it just isn't much.

Everyone has the right to a fair trial true. But from a moral perspective could you actually defend him when he was responsible for killing hundreds of thousands of people.

Defending barristers have to put their own personal moral perspective on the person they are representing to one side. It's called professionalism.

The barrister MUST do his professional best for his client.

There's something "right" about giving the tyrant something which he refused his victims - it punctuates his injustice. Then, I think he should not be put to death, but left in a cell in solitary confinement for the rest of his life.

Are we all looking at this from a western point of view?,should he be tried under a western democratic society?.

Under Iraqs(then)and his Ba'ath parties laws he might have acted in reasonable way(not my view but then ime a westerner),did his acts although barbaric in our western views stablise Iraq and surrounding regions and indeed contribute to saving other lives through creating a status quo between the different factions, something the allied forces are struggling to contain and in that we are creating Deaths everyday.

Under what rights do we have to go into a different country in a totally different culture under false pretences, change their society, dethrone a leader and then try him?,wasnt this something we fought against for Poland in WW2.

You're presuming hes guilty. The premise of a trial is to determine his guilt/innocence..

Mussolini dragged Italy out of the middle ages into the 20th century. Good man or tyrant?
Mao did similar for China but was probably the biggest mass murderer ever. Hitler did good stuff on his days of .

It's arguable about how Iraq would have gone without SH. But he appears to have been responsible for a lot of systematic murders which any culture finds abhorrent.

He doesn't deserve a trial in my book. Hand him over to the kurds and let them deal with him. That ought to be fairly quick.

They should have just chucked a grenade in the hole when they found him, and saved a whole lot of trouble.

Unfortunately lawyers do it all the time in the UK, some are guenine "Didnt do the crime" chappies, others are not, however with Sadam, I feel there is enough evidence to just shoot the bugger, better still drop him off back home, let those he abused, dish some of it out on him.

They'll be saying Mugarbe is a good chap next?

Should have just shot him while he was in that hole. We could have been done with all this nonsense.

I would like to know the difference between,
A/ Gassing a village of kurds.
B/ Dropping 2 atomic bombs on Cities.
C/ Dropping thousands of tons of bombs, rockets and shells on Iraqi towns and cities.
D/ Raising Dresden to the ground unnecessarily.

Ime not defending what Saddam Hussein did for one moment but i am just curious,or is this a only when it suits us type situation.

ZR1tobethrownoffacliff,

3 of the items were carried out in wartime.. the other was the attempted extermination of a racial group within a countries own borders.

If you dont think they are any different you wouldnt need German lessons now.

Wartime or not they all involved annihalation of civilians but i would argue that C/ was performed under an illegal war and probably involved the deaths of far more civilians than A/.

Oh thats alright then

Society is not a nice thing, we do bad things. We want to continue in the situation or comfort we are used to. Therefore there are those behind the scenes that make that happen, they do these things because you want your life to continue the way it is now.
To believe that we live or can live in some moral utopia infers delusion.

The strong protect themselves and perpetuate their strength, get use to it, or vote lib dem. Im happy that we are strong and allied to another strong nation.

Calm down Rich this isnt about what you and me might feel,to me its about understanding the differences between events that ive listed.
I hope we are in a war for the right reasons not just to be 'Pals' with a supernation, but for me the more i look at the war in Iraq the more it seems like we should of kept our noses out of it.
