Famously ironic as the only one without a beard. Another legend gone.

Although he did grow a beard towards the latter stages, just not as over the top as Billy and Dusty.

Signals the end of ZZ Top i think and sad to see him go as well.

Very sad to see this; never caught the band live, sadly, but their music was never far away.

La Grange will be getting a good loud airing later…

Was never a massive fan but loved their eliminator hits in the 80s.

It's the Billy Gibbons band now although Frank apparently said he wanted them to carry on.

Same.

Timely reminder though that we are all getting older.

Lived a hell of a Life. I feel very sad for Billy but I reckon he'll keep keepin' on....as both Dusty and Frank wanted.

They were my 80's soundtrack. Every album bunged into a Goodmans tape-player in my brown Mini Metro while I slogged 90 minutes in each direction to work every day. Mostly in the rain (Greenock to East Kilbride). They became my high-point of every day.

Eliminator was great but their earlier albums were so full of quirk, humour and fantastic playing. Particularly by Billy.

RIP Frank....as I don't have a drum kit I'll sit by the fire with my BillyBo, play some shuffle and think of you and the ashtray you always had fixed on your kit... hehe

RIP Frank.

I don't want to reduce Franks drumming achievement but his drums weren't used on Eliminator and most of Afterburner, that was a drum machine and samples, with his parts used as a guide. He wasn't happy when he found out....

There were rumours that he 'wasn't very well or reliable' during those periods.

The early albums were where his skills were best.

I enjoyed the '80s stuff. At the time I almost considered them a novelty act with their pretty girls, hot rod, furry rotating guitars and clearly not taking themselves too seriously. Silly ignorant young me.

Took me a while before I listened to their early '70s stuff. Just amazing.

And is there better driving music?

I seem to recall an interview where he was talking about having to go into rehab.

So they said to Dusty, Frank's in rehab, what are you going to do? Dusty said well....i'm going fishing.
Interviewer turned to Billy
Did you not think of getting another drummer in

There is no other drummer

Frank wasn't Neil Peart / Cozy Powell / John Bonham, but he was the rock that gave Billy and Dusty the platform for their Texas flavoured blues stuff.

Agreed. Even if you weren't a fan of the genre their 80's hits were iconic, with brilliant/fun videos.

RIP - their stuff from the 70's / early 80's was great, even if FB wasn't playing on some of it.

No, but his playing with the rest of the band made for an awesome rhythm section. (see also AC/DC, Fleetwood Mac, etc - founded on brilliant rhythm).
