Talk to me about the Honda Cr-v 2012-2018. Looking for a reliable family hack for around 7.5k or less, we have 2 kids under 3. Other car is an EV. (think of it as spreading the risk).

Petrol seems to be anemic but reliable, 2.2 diesel reliable but euro 5 (I dont visit many ULEZ zones....yet).

Any owners with experience who can advise on the sweet spot for spec/ do they take miles well. Lots on the used market with just over 100k on, doesn't scare me as long as it's not a slippery slope from there. It's a lot of car.

Is sunroof worth it, at 10 plus years old are we looking at drainage issues etc. Can carplay we retrofitted easily?

Can't offer any ownership experience but I do see a few of these at work. They're by no means unreliable but when the diesels let go it tends to be quite a pretty penny to fix them. I see very few petrol ones. Diesel injectors are expensive at the best of times, these ones in particular seem to set you back a few hundred quid each. Otherwise they seem to be typically Honda. Not the most exciting in the world but comfortable and dependable.

I’ve got a 2016 1.6 auto diesel, only bought due to buying a caravan, I’ve replaced the intercooler, common issue on these, and a radiator due to age.

Mine was up the north of Scotland for a few years so it’s pretty crusty underneath, I’ve tried to stop it getting worse with some protection, all in all it does what I need it to do, haven’t had any dpf issues even though it does a lot of small trips around town.

A relative has a 2.0 petrol EX spec with a fixed glass roof. He's had absolutely no problems with it at all. It's not at all economical (it's an auto) round town but his wife loves it.

I had a petrol 2015 EX spec. Great family car and was faultless. Pretty gutless but went well enough. The pano roof on the EX doesn’t open so I wouldn’t worry about that.

Parents had an EX spec 2009 diesel. Had no problems at all with. Was a nice car. Am sure you could retrofit updated infotainment. Dont know if they are still around but used to fit Xtrons units years ago to my cars. £200ish from memory.

I ran a 2.2cdti in an Accord for 10 years. It is a lovely engine, huge amounts of torque and bombproof. The only repairs in 175,000 miles was a DPF filter and a manifold gasket.

However for £7500 you can easily get into the 1.6 diesel which is a better choice.

I'm leaning towards the 1.6 in twin turbo guise.

You’ll never need another. Our 2009 diesel is on 210k miles and has had a clutch and dual mass flywheel and an alternator. That’s it. I have the oil changed after each MOT but have been ready to cull it every year. Think it hasn’t even had an advisory this year. I preferred the previous model, but ours had a dead engine by 110k so we bought the above about 10 years ago when it had done 50k.

The diesel isn’t ULEZ compliant so we have passed it on to a family member.

We have a 2ltr petrol on 140k miles, not had to do anything to it.

But....

It beeps and bongs too much and the ride quality is shocking.

I have a 2016 1.6 auto 4wd model. It's on something like 140k miles. Mine is a basic model with 17" alloy wheels. I intentionally chose this version for the comfortable ride and lack of sunroof. No problems in the 2 years that i have owned it. I'm planning to sell it ( cheap) if you're interested

Until recently I briefly had a 2017 2l petrol manual

It did everything it was supposed to, but..... Was utterly boring and characterless

I know, 'what do you expect', but I've had boring cars in the past (e.g absolute povvo spec first gen skoda yeti) which I've grown to love. For whatever reason, not this one, and I moved it on

We had the fixed sunroof, had no issues with it

It gave disappointingly poor mpg, but not compensated by anything you could call performance

The 2017 was originally released in 2012, and seems they didn't bother updating the tech at any point, if that sort of thing bothers you. It replaced a 2015 kia, and was replaced by a car only a year newer, but the Honda seemed to be at least a generation behind both of them in terms of tech. And it was the highest trim level.

I believe the rear subframe can be susceptible to rust. Not a difficult fix and easy to check.

That said, I hear form loads of people who like them and I see a lot about, but for whatever reason it didn't click

Great. robust car.

But Clutches start to slip £1.7K job
Wiper motor seems to get water in and be unable to be switched off.

Other than that, bland, tough and durable.
