I still dont understand why we jail people like this. They should be deported on conviction.

I must admit I'm in two minds about that. It's questionable whether the significant cost of prison (and a space being taken up) is worth it when we'll just boot them out at the end anyway but it doesn't serve as much of a deterrent if they know deportation will be the only consequence.

It is probably a lot cheaper to keep someone in a Nigerian prison than a British one. Send him back, get the Nigerian Correctional Service to look after him and split the difference in cost. Cheaper for us, more money for the hard working Nigerian taxpayer.

Why would Nigeria pay money to house a prisoner who committed no crime in Nigeria?

Yup, they get sent back to wherever they came from and can never return to the uk unless acquitted. If we were trying to re-habilitate or whatever I would understand imprisonment but if they are being deported at the end of the sentence why not save all that money and ship them out at the start.

Agreed. I suspect the conditions will be rather harsher for them too..

I will be very surprised if he is ever deported. No doubt find out he is Gay or Trans and can’t be deported.

I'd say it means that if it costs £2 a day to house a prison inmate in Nigeria, and £164 a day in the UK, then we pay Nigeria £81 a day

We save £83 a day, Nigeria makes £79 a day.

This was how I intended it. Obviously if we just told them to take him back they would say no, but if it can be mutually beneficial then let's make a deal.
