Anyone here following Sail GP? I went to Portsmouth at the weekend for the event and had a great time. A proper spectacle.
I had no real interest in sail racing until this. The broadcast coverage with the live graphic overlays and data make it understandable. That plus the small race courses, short sharp close races and huge speeds from the foiling boats turn sailing into a spectator sport.

My only interaction with it was being booked into Portsmouth as commercial traffic for 1600 on the Friday as that time was selected by Portsmouth VTS to de-conflict with the racing, and then be held off the port for 1.5 hours because of race practices overrunning.

Cowes Week manages to deconflict racing with commercial traffic well, why when there is lots of available water the east, still visible from the front, do they run the racing in the Bar channel?

No-one else I know was excited by it, it's a shame as it's good racing, but the organisation and promotion is woeful.

I went to the Halifax event a few years back and had a great time. The racing is intense and they really have a superb boat and sailor lineup. I'm glad it still has more human element than the America's Cup is trending towards.

They do a decent job of producing the broadcast and provide a good spectator experience, but rhe tickets are pricey. Gotta pay for carting that circus around the world somehow.

As Stick Legs noted, woeful publicity, seeing as this thread is what brought it to my attention.

I wish organisations like this could secure tv coverage, as this sounds ideal for sharing with a wider audience.
