No, just absolutely no. Under any circumstances!

The original is a classic and one of my all time top 10. The chess game is so engaging and the glider scene epic. Steve McQueen and Fay Dunaway are ice cold throughout. The 1999 Pierce Brosnan one barely passed my sniff test and like remaking the Italian Job, some things are just better left alone.

Why can't anyone come up with some decent new film stories these days. Do we really have to keep bringing out plots from the archive just because they are from a previous generation and hope no one remembers or compares??

Original was great. Pierce Brosnan remake even better IMHO because Rene Russo.

Will give this new one a chance...

Rage bait stunt casting, again! It is so transparent, yet like the emperor's new clothes we are not permitted to point it out lest we be castigated and criticised by our peers.

Which bit is making you so very sad?

From Wikipedia - 'Self-made millionaire businessman Thomas Crown is a handsome, dashing, cultured adrenaline junkie'

You can be that even when you're not, or no longer, white. Thomas could even be a trans leftist and still fulfill the criteria.

What's the issue, exactly?

Michael B. Jordan stated: “The first two films were about rich white guys stealing for fun. That doesn't land today... Ours is more personal. The stakes are higher.
They're changing the story away from the original completely. Still the writer died earlier this year and Amazon need to grab some cash back from their investment.

But, but. Micheal B Jordan is a very talented actor, the leading lady is a great choice and they're even brought Kenneth Branagh into the cast. The two script writers have done some decent films in the past.

Does beg the question though - why re-use the name when the film is clearly nothing like the original.

Everyone wants tired old half-remembered IP to hang things on.

I've yet to hear anyone state 'when do we get a new Thomas Crown film? I want one NOW.'

They must be running short of it by now.

From the info released, Crown is going to break into museums and return artifacts back to their countries of origin.

rofl Isn't that just the Black Panther script?

It looks like they've taken a clever, sophisticated, adrenaline junkie and turned him into a lumbering action hero.

Ah yes - the old "subvert the source material for a modern audience" approach. Indeed the deception is to imply a connection with the original by re-using the title. The DEI bit is also a problem as it is skewing the creative process and the people who are scared to call it out for fear of being called "ists" and "phobes" are mugs.

Entertainment products are struggling for attention in a crowded market so resorting to rage-bait marketing is now a sad norm. Why not just create a new intellectual property instead of using an existing one as a Trojan Horse (Odyssey reference intentional)?

It is coming down to the need to keep the slop content production line going.

Let me guess - as another dodgy Russian with an even dodgier accent? He's certainly pulling the usual face of that recycled character in the trailer.

Not sure it looks great, and produced by/directed by/starring might have worked for Eastwood and some other talents but I'm not sure it will work here. The trailer is certainly all centred on the lead actor not the story.

He'll always be Ernest Shackleton to me.
