Ex….. now a step back in time, a living breathing museum of early 20th century maritime history. Steam powered and run entirely by volunteers… a 71 year old marvel!

Costs a bloody fortune; I'd not tell you not to do it, but there are cheaper ways of having salt water fired at you out of a hose. Have you done any yacht racing?

My sister finished yesterday. She circumnaviagted, having left around eleven months ago.

£50,000 ish., plus costs. I reckon she spent 75-80 in total.

Mate of mine did the North Atlantic last sector 10 years ago and that cost him a sizeable 5-figure sum. He's glad he did it but didn't particularly enjoy it. Spending most of your waking and sleeping day at 45 degrees was his least favourite part. I guess the calmer sections through the doldrums are more fun. 3 participants died that year, first ever fatalities in the race and one had to be buried at sea in the Southern Oceans.

Considering wind is free, somebody's making some money while you risk your life uncomfortably.

Odd attitude, the boats, skippers and support infrastructure are far from free. Getting to sail around the world for the price of a nice car seems a reasonable deal if thats what you want to do.

Will it be uncomfortable and dangerous? Yes. But people pay fortunes to climb everest, fly to space etc.

I read a book a while back about sailing around the world for free as crew on deliveries etc. The Authors dream was to do a transatlantic and he got rhe opportunity to do so with a professional solo ocean racer on a racing yacht. He hated it, brutally uncomfortable and the skipper had the personality type of someone who liked being alone for long periods.

I assumed they used their own boats. But if you have to hire a boat and a crew, fair enough.

It's a race for amateurs with little to no expeirence. One prefessional skipper and first mate per boat, the remaining crew being made up of, generally, fewer people than is ideal.

No I haven't, it looks exciting and quite the experience. I do like some type 2 fun from time to time. You are right though, it's not cheap.

Teams as well I see.

It seems a bit like someone who wants to take part in the World Rally Championship but doesn't have a car so they hire a car, driver and a navigator, and sit in the back seat.

Hmm, a business plan formeth!

I'm sure you're being a deliberate dick, but they're not passengers.

Wow bet he was shocked to find out how tippy the boat was. He must have been worried it would fall over in all that wind.

Proper ocean racers sail faster boats singlehanded.
These things are designed around the idea of keeping the paying guests busy.
