I would say this looks to be the most pointless movie ever made, but they are also thinking of basing a movie on a few chapters removed from FOTR for pacing and time reasons. So THAT movie will take the title.

It'll be st.

Everything they've done since the first trilogy including the Hobbit films has been st, talentless hacks padding the material to stretch it out.

Did The Rings of Power teach them nothing? Do they think there's an audience wanting this?

Is it a where's Gollum like where's Wally? Couldn't it just be an email?

I wonder whether Jackson et al were provoked into this by the execrable Amazon series.

On the plus side they have kept the formidable writing team. If they keep the landscape; the culture and make a psychological tale rather than an action movie, it could work.

On negative side, very little source material, can PJ keep his hands off and stop it turning into a Hobbit style whizz bang bloatfest? There is a massive Viggo shaped deficit in the main character. Props to VM for keeping out of the Hobbit and this.

The only area where there is scope for more movies is the Silmarillion and they don't (yet) have the rights.

They tried doing something set in the second age, based only on the appendices, and the result was Rings of Power. Hollywood doesn't have the talent to create a fantasy epic virtually from nothing like that.

As an example of what I mean there is the example of GOT. So long as it was based on books written by someone with talent it was one of the best shows on TV. The moment they ran out of books it became dire.

Going to be contrarian, here.

I didn't mind The Hobbit and the backstory to Gollum, in the vein of some widening of the people and places of Middle Earth, I'm all for.

Of course, it will depend on the story they throw together but since it is mentioned in The Fellowship of the Ring, I (for one) would be happy to have someone delve further into it.

Loved the books, were my favourite as a youngster.

Loved the PJ films, both The Hobbit and LOTR trilogy.

Can't say I loved the ROP, but I did enjoy it and looking forward to the next season.

Looking forward to this as well.

Seeing the comments above, I feel very much in a minority of 1?

Loved the LOTR trilogy myself, like some parts of the Hobbit movies while thinking they were bloated and mostly poor. Gave up on ROP after one season.

Bit like the potty harry stuff. You have to produce new content as people will move on and forget the films otherwise.
James bond expanded universe could be fun. A Dr No film where he's getting the extensive secret lare build without anyone noticing.
Then James Bond fks it all up in a couple of hrs lol.

I love lotr and the massive dvd releases and all the extras.... but everything since has not been a patch on it ... It's a real shame but I don't think this will be much different. It will suffer from sequelitus that many do, that we know certain events will happen and characters won't die...so will probably be a bit lacklustre and only be of passing interest to me for sure......

Isn’t he melted to nothing in that volcano? Good luck searching through that, although I suspect it would take at least three films and two ten episode series to do so.

The big problem with Rings of Power was that they couldn't use anything from The Silmarillion as Christopher Tolkien's family hold the rights to it, and that leaves a huge hole in any pre-LOTR storyline.
