Have a week off mid September and plan to visit :

The Deep
Yorkshire Wildlife Park
Chester Zoo

Have a ful week free, so plenty of time.

Looking for other things worth visiting in the area, recommendations on places to stay/eat etc.

Have driven all round the area for work, but never had time to enjoy it.

York city itself is well worth a mooch around - characterful centre and lots of interesting / independent shops (unlike most city centres nowadays).

...beyond that, are you on your own, with missus, with kids - what sort of recommendations should we be giving you?

Near The Deep in Hull is Spurn Point which is a nice visit/walk if the weather is cooperating.

I quite like the North Sea coast section from Staithes, Whitby. Robin Hood Bay, Ravenscar, Scarborough, Filey to Bridlington.

More centrally - Piece Hall in Halifax, Salts Mill/Saltaire

If you want a shopping day then Leeds is better than Manchester or York. York is pleasant but tiny. Leeds has a load of shopping centres and arcades, the Corn Exchange and you can walk from the City Centre to the Royal Armouries.

I wouldnt bother with Yorkshire wildlife park, go to York instead as advised

Knowsley safari park might be worth a look, a night in Liverpool would work with your itinerary. Its been massively gentrified although Im not the best person to advise where exactly to stay

Stay on site at Yorkshire wildlife park and ask for a zoo view room, we had views of the maned wolves and taipur.
Very much enjoyed it.

You can also now stay alongside Chester Zoo. And the zoo is not a "cheap day out". On the other hand if it rains for more that a few hours (3?) during your visit there is a deal where you can come back another day for free. Just to see the big stuff means a lot of walking, and for example the big cat compounds are spacious enough that after morning feeding the animals can rest in places hidden from visitors. As ever, feeding the penguins is a huge draw
