Got a bit of a noise on cold start which I'm happy to live with but perhaps it needs looking at.
Basically on engine tick over there is a "spinning squeek" noise. Once the engine is warmed up the noise comes back but only when I apply any amount of throttle.
I'm trying to avoid a 120 mile round trip for the dealer to look at this so if anybody has any thoughts please shout, ta.

Yes, sounds like the belts (this will be more evident in the colder/damper weather) just apply some lube spray whilst running and it should go away. Try to avoid WD40 as, although it works, it strips away any existing lubricant.
Is it sensible to spray a lubricant onto the belts? I thought the idea was that they used friction to turn stuff?

Well, I've seen sprays that mention use on belts so yes - and its a common fix in the trade AFAIK.

Do NOT use a lubricant!
Strange as it seems I've been told by many a mechanic to use natural hand soap (not fairy liquid, but the hard block soap) to stop the squeaking.
However, a squeak normally means the belt isn't adjusted for the correct tension so you really should get it professionally checked out as if it continues to squeak you could be looking at an early failure.

Well then somebody better tell the dealers and the factory as I've seen them both use spray lube to cure a noisy belt!!!
As I said, it depends if the squeak is down to incorrect tension. If it's tensioned correctly but still squeaks (i.e. the squeak isn't an indicator of it being incorrect) then soap or one of these belt sprays will of course be fine.
As with most things, and as I said above, if you are at all worried about something on the car, best to go back to a professional.

Surely it's just a belt? I would have thought any decent local dealer should be able to tension/replace it for you if you're not comfortable doing it yourself.
Going to get my pre-track day checks done at the same time so seems like a good idea now.
Dealer said it costs just as much in time to check the belt as it does to replace. Belts are approx £12.

My mum had this exact problem on her car.
A squeek...squeek...squeek...squeek in time with the revs of the car (would speed up as the revs did).
As soon as the car warmed it went away.
Turned out to be the alternator belt. It was replaced at Mole Valley for around £130 I think.
Problem has not been back since.

My car makes a really irritating noise which could well be the same thing. I had it serviced a couple of weeks back and ever since the belt on the drivers side of the engine has been squeaking like crazy, but only when the engine is warm. It's fine when I cold start it. I took it back last week, and they stuck another new belt on there, but now it's back again...
