Hi I am looking at an MG TF as a first track day car, the car is prebuilt with minor modifications including race suspension and brakes also with a stage one remap and a cold air intake. I am wondering if I should be concerned about corrosion and any other issues I may come across, I have been to see the car today and cannot see any bad issues with rust or any issues with the engine etc itself and it starts first time with no issues at all. The car also comes with a full set of unused race tires. It is a 2003 plate with 60000 miles and 3 owners and has only been on 4 track days. Any thoughts or advise would be greatly appreciated.

So you're going for the MG then! In fairness, it does look like a very clean car, albeit with many questionable cosmetic and 'aerodynamic' modifications. Up to you how much of that you keep on - the car might be faster without them.

It certainly won't be the fastest car on most trackdays - it'll probably be one of the slowest. But it should be enough to get you going and get some seat time. Make sure theres some brake pads and fresh fluids in it, then send it. Good luck to you.

To answer your queries, corrosion won't matter if it's not structural.

My thoughts, on what you have described:

Pros:
- Steering feel will be good, being mid engined
- If it's had suspension work, it should have had a proper geo setup
- It's reasonably light
- "Race tyres" sound good, but if they are slicks they will be useless in the wet. Best off having 2 sets
- "Race brakes" sound good. The most important part of a track car.

Cons:
- It's the Rover 1.8 engine? They're not particularly powerful or reliable. That's my biggest concern
- You could go quicker, more reliably, for less money

Either way, you'll have fun. It is very addictive.

Feel free to tag along to Cadwell Park with me if you'd like a passenger ride in mine first, to get a feel for the track.

I think that MGF is very overpriced, yes sure it will be slow. But no worse than an mx5, but far less forgiving & easy to chuck around
