i water my lawn and its just about hanging on , last hot spell i left it then cut as soon as the worst heat was over , tbh it went a bit yellow , not sure if it was the heat or the fact it got a bit long

whats best to do ? leave it overgrown until its cooler ?

I sprinkle mine once a week in the summer / prolonged dry spells (call them "heatwaves" if you prefer BBC type vernacular for any weather over 20 degrees for 2 days) which seems enough to keep it 50/50 green and brown. Last owners did not and it was all yellow / brown . Recovered over the autumn winter mind you. So I guess its down to "do you want to look at a brown lawn, or a greener one".

I water am or PM, never in the hot sun.

Longer blades of grass provide shade for the roots. In this weather I lift my mower to the highest setting. It picks up leaves and gives an even cut but still gives good protection. Seems to work quite well.

Lol - I forgot he asked about cutting, not watering! Doh!

I do dthe same as above, blades high, high enough to catch weeds and barley grass
