Currently looking at a 2022 118i manual with 34k miles for the wife. She dies around 5-6k miles per year, mostly short journeys.
She hates automatics and insists on a manual. A search of the web sends to suggest the 3 cylinder engine is pretty reliable, but others complain of coolant issues being common.
Are there any dire issues that are 'it will probably Happen', or is it a safe bet.

I had the same engine in a previous 1 series and it was absolutely faultless.

Sounded pretty good, went well enough, good on fuel etc.

I've now got an F40 (newer shape 1 series) and the interoir and tech is miles better than the older F20 shape. Decent amount of cabin space, should have car play/android auto etc.

The only issues I've had with mine were a faulty headlight which was fixed under warranty by BMW.

We’ve got a Mini Cooper with the same engine. It’s been fitted in Mini’s since 2014 and is generally seen as problem free. I think it’s a great ‘everyday’ engine- 0-60 in 8 secs and 45 mpg in the mini (likely to be more like 9 secs and 40 mpg in the heavier 1 series).
